Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Virginia Tech Hokies NCAA Preview & Free Pick

Week 1 2012 Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech Predictions

Given what a dud Alabama/Michigan was this could easily be the best and certainly the most important game of the opening week.  Georgia Tech is always in the mix in the ACC and whoever wins this one will have a leg up both in the conference and in confidence.

Georgia Tech

I have to admit I am always a bit bullish on GT as their offense can just destroy people.  If they can get some defensive balance they can surprise this year.

The Tech running game is really fun to watch.  They return starting QB Tevin Washington who is a better runner than thrower but can create big plays doing both.  He is a senior and I expect a big season out of him, especially if they find a big play receiver to replace Steven Hill (they seemingly always do).  They will have a great chance at the upset if the defense can make the Hokies one dimensional – which might not be a stretch given the VT is missing a lot of their offensive personnel from last season.

GT has the rare conference game to open the season.  Since their system is firmly in place and they have experience in their offense I don’t think we will see much rust.  I love the Yellow Jackets at this number and am very tempted to put a few sheckels on the SU upset.  If they win they could easily be 5-0 heading into a huge showdown at Clemson. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Virginia Tech

Others might not be on the same page but to me Virginia Tech is an elite program  More often than not they crank out double digit wins and play in big bowl games, which is made all the more impressive by the fact that they don’t seem to recruit as much elite talent as other top programs.  This year might be one of the toughest coach Frank Beamer has experienced in a while but it will help having an NFL prospect as the triggerman.

That would be behemoth Logan Thomas who was originally recruited to play TE.  Thomas will try and do a Cam Newton impression  – literally.  He may actually be good enough to do so and will have to be the lead dog with all his skill position talent having moved on to the NFL.  Unlike Newton at Auburn Thomas is likely to receive support from one of the best defenses in the country.  That is where all the returnees are.

Night games at Lane Stadium provide a fantastic atmosphere.  The Hokies are strong at home but are not cover machines, in fact they lost every home game against the number last season – surprising!!.  This one should be a very good game.  VT is familiar with GT so it might take a quarter or two for either team to figure out how they are going to attack.  I think that will favour the dogs.

Spread Pick: Georgia Tech +7
O/U Pick:  Under
Score Prediction:  Georgia Tech 28 – Virginia Tech 17
