Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2012 NCAA Gambling Odds & Predictions

2012-13 Football Previews – (ACC) – Wake Forest

Wake Forest has had the same coach now for 11 years. The Demon Deacons are always fighting an uphill battle as the smallest school in the Bowl Subdivision. Team depth has been an issue for many years. Jim Grobe thinks the team’s overall depth is a little better this season.

Wake finished 6-7 last season, but it was two rough losses to Syracuse and Clemson that kept the team from finishing in positive territory.

There has been talent at the skill positions the last couple years, but Wake Forest has struggled with production on the lines. Wake doesn’t have the size to outmuscle teams all that often, but they need to be able to use their athleticism all over the field. Let’s take a look at this year’s roster.

Team Strengths:

Tanner Price is a seasoned veteran at this point in his career, and he gives Wake Forest a talented signal caller leading the offense. Price threw for more than 3,000 yards and had 20 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions a year ago. Price did not throw a single interception in his last 173 pass attempts last season. This is a great cerebral guy to have under center.

Wake Forest has a lot of experience and talent in the secondary. Merill Noel and Kenny Okoro give the team a terrific tandem at the cornerback spots. The safety spots should be filled by Daniel Mack and Duran Lowe. This is an aggressive secondary that keeps opponents on their toes at all times. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The running back spot is an area of strength for the Deacons. Josh Harris has tremendous quickness, and he could do big things if he stays healthy. Orville Reynolds has great top-end speed, and he should get plenty of carries as well.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line was terrible in 2011. Wake Forest had just 11 sacks all year last season. That is a sign that opposing quarterbacks simply had all kinds of time to survey the field and pick apart this defense. No one has been able to step up as a pass rusher at the defensive end spot, and that is sorely needed in 2012.

The offensive line has been a big issue for the past few years as well. Coach Grobe basically had open tryouts in the spring to decide who would be the starting linemen this season. Garrick Williams is a very good center, but there are question marks all around him.

The wide receiver spot is a problem area since Chris Givens surprisingly entered the NFL Draft early. Wake Forest is extremely thin on the depth chart at this position, and that could hold them back this year.

2012-2013 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Football Prediction: 6-7

Wake Forest looks extremely similar to 2011 to me. This team will struggle on both the offensive and defensive line, and that makes it difficult to win games against quality opponents. I think Wake Forest may well make it back to another bowl game because they have some cupcakes on the non-conference schedule. Look for another season a lot like 2011.
