ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Coach: Jim Grobe
2009 Record: 5-7

Wake Forest Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

It is easy to forget that it was just 2006 when Wake Forest played Louisville in the Orange Bowl. In those years since, both the Cardinals and the Demon Deacons have gone into the tank to a certain extent.

Coach Grobe has done a solid job with a small school program that graduates the vast bulk of its players; it’s really difficult to get the top-tier recruits to Winston-Salem.

Yet, Wake will inevitably feel the absence of longtime starter (and school career passing leader) Riley Skinner and though the Deacons play fantastic team football, it will be a challenge to make inroads in the Atlantic division this season.

Team Strengths:

Wake Forest has several players that can punch their weight with any elite players in the ACC. Senior tailback Josh Adams had an excellent start to his career, rushing for 953 yards as a redshirt freshman in 2007. He has been banged up since, but if he can shake the band-aid label, he should have his best season as a senior. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

He’ll have lanes between the tackles with C Russell Nenon and RG Joe Looney clearing the way.

The secondary is the bright spot on the Deacons’ defense. Cornerback Kenny Okoro is a bona fide playmaker and safety Cyhl Quarles was the team’s second-leading tackler in ’09. The special teams unit should also be vastly improved.

Team Weaknesses:

Defensive co-ordinator Brad Lambert must squeeze every drop out of a green defensive line. The new starters in the middle are underclassmen, and though sophomore DT Ramon Booi showcases great size (6”6, 300 lbs) they are unproven. The linebacker corps has experience, but little jaw-dropping talent.

Junior Skylar Jones should start under center; considering he saw time at wide receiver last season, he likely won’t make fans forget about Skinner overnight. Senior WR Marshall Williams is a great target, but Adams will probably still have to carry the offense.

2010-2011 Wake Forest Football Prediction: 5-7

The Deacons are battling through a lean era lately. Wake Forest must break in a lot of new faces and the ultra-accurate Skinner was intrinsic to the offense. In 2010, drawing Stanford and Navy out of conference does not do the Deacons any favors.

Wake Forest could win four to six games, but it would be a pleasant surprise if Grobe’s kids were bowl eligible.
