#22 Virginia Tech Hokies (5-3) v East Carolina Pirates (5-3)
Virginia Tech: 3-5 ATS / East Carolina: 3-4 ATS

The No. 22 Virginia Tech Hokies will roll into Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Thursday looking to avenge a surprising 27-22 loss in last year’ meeting against the East Carolina Pirates.

Virginia Tech has lost two straight games. The Hokies were upset 20-17 by North Carolina in Week 9.

Tech standout, QB Tyrod Taylor completed just 11 of 23 passes, but had two rushing touchdowns in the loss for the Hokies. Probably the team’s most consistent aspect was special teams play. The run defense continues to have problems. North Carolina rushed for 181 yards and pushed the defensive line around all day. Strong running games gave Virginia Tech trouble in losses to Alabama (268 yards) and Georgia Tech (309 yards).

East Carolina has won two consecutive games, and seven of its last nine road games against C-USA East opponents. The Pirates had a season-high 275 rushing yards and scored four of their five touchdowns on the ground as they shut down the Memphis running game in Tuesday’s 38-19 victory, holding the Tigers to 84 yards. They finished with a season-high 497 total yards of offense. QB Patrick Pinkney went 14-of-26 for 214 yards, had two touchdown runs and an interception. Running back Dominique Lindsay posted his third career 100-yard contest. The Pirates have a pass defense that is questionable, allowing more than 250 passing yards in six of eight games. The run defense has played well allowing an average of just 108 yards per game, giving up just nine rushing touchdowns in eight games.

Va Tech vs. ECU Odds

The Hokies are –13-point favorites in this one.

If the Pirates want to repeat last year’s upset they need to continue working on their red-zone offense, which came through with three touchdowns in three trips inside the 20 against Memphis. The Hokies will need to launch an effective air assault if they want to come away with the win.

Hokies vs. Pirates Free Pick

My play is on the Pirates, as they surprise the Hokies again.
