Now the Hokies will have to avoid a letdown and turn their attentions over to Boston College, as another tough ACC opponent has the Hokies in their crosshairs.

Not a whole lot went right for Virginia Tech in what turned out to be a shocking loss to Duke, falling by a score of 13-10.

The Virginia Tech offense was able to move the ball more often than not against Duke, but they failed to get the ball into the endzone all but once. Quarterback Logan Thomas was both the star, and the dud of the game. Thomas completed 21 of 38 passes for 214 yards and four interceptions, but also ran for 101 yards and a score, so it was a mixed bag from him. In total, the Hokie offense churned out 387 yards, but converted on just four of 18 third down opportunities, and managed to score only 10 points.

Despite the loss, the Hokie defense had a great game, keeping their team in it for most of the contest. The Hokies won the possession battle, holding the ball for 39:27, meaning the Blue Devils had the ball for just 20:33. In that time, Duke was limited to just 198 yards of offense, including just 91 on the ground. Duke quarterback Anthony Boone completed just seven of 25 passes for 107 yards and four interceptions, although he did add a rushing touchdown. The unit held Duke without a single conversion on 11 third down attempts. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Boston College brings a 1-3 record in ACC play into this contest, but they’ve actually been better against conference opponents than that record suggests. The team hung in with Florida State and Clemson, covering the spread in both games. However, they were blown out of the water in their last contest. The Eagles fell to North Carolina, 34-10. The team’s offense never really got going. Quarterback Chase Rettig completed 10 of 20 passes for just 57 yards. The team’s offensive star was running back Andre Williams, who turned 26 carries into 172 yards and a score.

The Eagle defense didn’t do much in the way of slowing North Carolina’s offense. Tar Heels quarterback Bryn Renner completed 18 of 21 passes for 227 yards and a pair of scores, while fellow quarterback Marquise Williams completed four of eight passes for 55 yards and a score, adding an additional 55 yards and a score on the ground. Having trouble like that with a mobile quarterback doesn’t bode well for the team’s chances with Logan Thomas on deck.

The Hokies haven’t been great at building up margins, and the Eagles have done a great job of hanging with superior ACC teams, particularly at home, but Frank Beamer will have his troops ready to make some noise in this one after their disappointing effort a week ago.

The play: Virginia Tech -5
