Virginia Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Virginia has a new coach and new schemes to go with it. It also loses longtime QB candidate Jameel Sewell, who left Charlottesville as the third all-time leading passer (partially because he was in the mix since 2006!) In a conference and a division where there aren’t many creampuff weeks on the schedule, the Cavs could conceivably be in for a long season.

Virginia has a couple good vets and a couple promising young players; it is a program that always somehow pulls out one stud recruit per year.

Yet, the only bowling a Virginia fan will see is if Kingpin is playing on TBS.

Team Strengths:

Again, random excellent players are sprinkled in the roster.

Senior cornerback Ras-I Dowling is a legitimate NFL talent; Canadian junior LG Austin Pasztor can play with any O-lineman in the ACC; sophomore linebacker Steve Greer was a freshman All-American and 2009’s leading tackler; junior nose tackle Nick Jenkins is a beast. However, do these remote parts add up to a cohesive, winning team? [soliloquy id=”82219″]

One final bright spot: monster freshman RT Morgan Moses (6”6, 336 lbs!) was one of the top recruits in the country and re-joins the Cavs after spending time at Fork Union.

He’ll almost surely start. Moses is also further evidence of the “one great prospect per year” theory.

Team Weaknesses:

The quarterback situation is nothing short of pathetic. The only hyped prospect the position held (Peter Lalich) transferred to Oregon State.

The graduated Sewell started off and on for a long time, but he wasn’t exactly Joe Montana. Now QB has a noticeable drop-off from Sewell, as senior Marc Verica will get the nod. Verica has 63 career attempts for 156 yards and a pick.

To make matters worse, Verica will be throwing to a bunch of nobody wide receivers – junior Kris Burd is the best in a hurting unit.

2010-2011 Virginia Football Prediction: 4-8

Virginia must endure a game at Southern Cal in the second week of the season, as well as tilts against Florida State, North Carolina, Miami, Georgia Tech and hated Virginia Tech.

There may be some strong individual performances, but Virginia must rebuild under new coach London and asking much more (if anything) than last year’s performance is probably a tall order for 2010.
