SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Vanderbilt Commodores

Coach: Bobby Johnson
2009 Record: 2-10

Vanderbilt Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

The Commodores of Vanderbilt certainly aren’t known for their football tradition. In 2008, Vanderbilt went 7-6 and had one of the best years in recent memory. Just one year later, the Commodores would lose their final eight games of the season and finish 2-10. The offense has been the real problem, and more specifically, the passing game.

This 2010 Vanderbilt team will have athletes, but they need to get things together quickly to make a big step in right direction in the SEC. This isn’t a conference where a team can win with athletes alone, rather they must be an all-around solid team with few weaknesses.

This will probably be a long season for the Commodores, but their fans will definitely be expecting some improvement from last year’s terrible campaign.

Team Strengths:

The linebackers are tremendous on this team. Chris Marve is one of the best middle linebackers in the nation and he gets his nose in on just about every play. On the outside Vanderbilt has a group of four or five guys who are quick and athletic that will rotate in and work to get into the backfield.

The running backs are solid at Vanderbilt, with Warren Norman and Zac Stacy getting the majority of the carries. Norman is the man who can break the bigger runs, but Stacy is also very effective on a consistent basis.

Team Weaknesses:

Outside of the running back position, you could list just about every offensive position as a team weakness for the Commodores. The single biggest problem over the last two years has been at quarterback. Larry Smith has the ability to be a dual-threat at the quarterback position, but he just hasn’t shown it at all.

Smith will probably get the first crack at the starting job this year, but don’t be shocked if Jordan Rodgers (Aaron’s younger brother) gets some playing time as well.

The offensive line was decent last year, but they have to replace four starters and this could slow down the running game. If the offensive line doesn’t dominate the line of scrimmage and allow Vanderbilt to consistently run the football, this team will struggle to score.

The defense overall is pretty good, but the defensive line is a weakness. The defensive line doesn’t have that run stopper to plug the hole against those strong SEC teams.

2010-2011 Vanderbilt Football Prediction: 2-10

This Vanderbilt team has way too many holes to be a solid team in the SEC. The offense averaged less than 9 points per game in the SEC last year, and it won’t be much better this year. The running backs and linebackers are solid, but they can’t be counted on to win games by themselves.

I think Bobby Johnson’s squad will probably upset someone in SEC play, but they still finish the year off with the same record as last season.
