Conference USA Football Previews: UTEP
Head Coach: Mike Price
2009 Record: 4-8

In 2009, many experts were giving UTEP a chance to win the Conference USA West Division. As it turns out, the team was a big disappointment last year. Mike Price was treated like a king when he first arrived in El Paso, but now fans are starting to wonder what happened to the progress this program was making. Is this a bump in the road or are there long-term problems?
This will be a pivotal year for the team, as expectations are set lower, but they still have plenty of talent.

The offense has proven play makers at both the quarterback and running back position, which is a good way to jump start a team. If the Miners are going to make a large jump in the standings this year, they will need the defense to be at least decent.
In the last few years, the defense has been one of the worst in football.
Team Strengths:
Donald Buckram is a standout running back who proved last year he can be a real workhorse for this football team. He actually earned fourth team All-America honors a year ago, and should be a star once again for this offense.
Trevor Vittatoe had a down year in 2009 after two impressive years in 2007 and 2008. Vitatoe has all the tools to be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference. I expect him to bounce back and have a big year in 2010.
Team Weaknesses:
The entire defense could really be counted as a huge weakness for this team. The single biggest concern is probably regarding the middle of the defense. The Miners don’t have any kind of run stuffing presence on the line or at the linebacker position. In 2009, they allowed a little over 5 yards per run. It wouldn’t surprise me if they fare even worse this year.
The secondary is also a concern, because outside of Braxton Amy, there just isn’t much proven talent there. Amy is coming off a major injury, and even he is a question mark. UTEP has consistently been beaten deep in recent years, so they’ll need the safeties to keep the play in front of them.
The offense as a whole looks very good, but the receiving corps is a little weak. Kris Adams was great two years and disappeared last year. He may bounce back this year, but the depth isn’t what a team like UTEP would like to have since they have the quarterback to air out the football.
2010-2011 UTEP Miners Football Predictions: 6-6
The Miners are a very difficult team to predict because they are so good on offense and so awful on defense. This offense could put up some huge numbers, but the defense will definitely get lit up quite frequently. The schedule isn’t that difficult, so I see the potential for them to surprise and get back to a bowl game. The team needs to start out well, because the schedule gets tougher at the end of the year.
I think the Miners will improve this year, but the defense will hold them back from accomplishing bigger things.
