With 2 potent offenses and solid defenses, this Pac-12 vs Mountain West matchup could easily bring fireworks.

Utah State

Coming to the Coliseum with upset on their minds are the Aggies of Utah State. Powered by their potent offense (550.3 – 12th in the nation), Utah State has managed a 49.3 point per game average already this season.

Quarterback Chuckie Keeton is 82 of 103 on the season for 923 yards, 12 touchdowns and 1 interception. His 12 touchdowns are tied for first in college football. He’s also rushed for a team leading 207 yards and a touchdown. Helping Keeton on the ground is Joe Hill, Joey DeMartino and Robert Marshall, who all have 100+ yards rushing on the season already.

Joe Van Leeuwen has been Keeton’s biggest target, making 13 catches for 226 yards and 1 touchdown. Behind Van Leeuwen are Bruce Natson and Travis Reynolds, who both have 159 yards receiving on the year. Reynolds has 2 touchdowns.

The Aggie defense has been as effective as the offense. The 286 yards per game the defense allows is good for 13th in the nation. Leading tackler linebacker Jake Doughty has an eye popping 30 tackles while linebacker Zach Virgil has 23 tackles and 2 forced fumbles. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

USC

With quarterback Cody Kessler seemingly the #1 in place for the Trojans, things clicked last week against Boston College. The 35-7 win saw Kessler go 15 of 17 for 237 and 2 touchdowns. With Silas Redd still out, running back Tre Madden has taken over the starting running back role with 300 straight 100+ yard games. The last Trojan to do it was Marcus Allen in 1981.

Headliner Marquise Lee hasn’t disappointed, still managing 221 yards and a touchdown despite the QB shuffle in Los Angeles. He is, however, the only Trojan wide receiver with over 100 yards receiving.

USC can thank its defense for keeping things together, posting top ten numbers in scoring defense, tackles for loss, pass efficiency defense, interceptions, sacks, rushing defense and total defense. Dion Bailey is leading the team with 21 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions and 4 passes defended on the season.

Leading the team in sacks is George Uko with 3, followed by Morgan Breslin, Leonard Williams and Devon Kennard. Kennard also had 4 tackles for loss, 2 passes defended and 1 fumble recovery.

Prediction: Utah State to cover

Despite the David vs Goliath portrayal of USC vs non-elite opponents, this is the most human USC has been in years. If Utah State can continue to mix things up, their lethal offense will roll against a 1 dimensional Trojan squad.
