Coach: Butch Davis
2008 Record: 8-5

Butch Davis has brought in three consecutive talented recruiting classes.

Sooner or later, it has to start paying off. Despite being outgained in yardage in 2008, UNC managed to string together an 8-5 season and a narrow 31-30 loss to West Virginia in its bowl game. Davis’ most talented team yet must surely yield equivalent, if not improved, results.

While the offense will miss glossy WR Hakeem Nicks, now with the New York (football) Giants, there are still viable targets in Dwight Jones, freshman Joshua Adams and converted tailback Greg Little. Pivot T.J. Yates should prove capable and he has a strong backup in Mike Paulus (whose brother, Greg, played hoops at Duke and flirted with playing QB for the Maize and Blue).

On defense, DT Marvin Austin and ‘backer Bruce Carter are monsters and OLB Zach Brown has sub-4.4 speed.

Team Strengths
Defensive coordinator Everett Withers enjoys a nice blend of size and speed on his side of the ball. Second-leading 2008 tackler Mark Paschal is gone, as is safety Trimaine Goddard’s seven INTs, but everyone else returns.

There is depth and experience at tailback; LT Kyle Jolly has grown into an excellent lineman.

Team Weaknesses
Nicks was a huge part of the attack last year as proved with 68 receptions for 1,222 yards and 12 scores. The ‘O’ also loses its second and third-leading receivers from ’08. There are a couple new faces to be broken in on the line with guard Alan Pelc and tackle Mike Ingersoll. Lanky walk-on punter Grant Shallock will battle soph Jay Wooten for the job.

At the very least, the Tar Heels have both experience and coveted talent. UNC has a manageable schedule, with the toughest challenge on Oct. 29 at Virginia Tech.

Davis is reeling in some quality players from the eastern seaboard and it is fair to say that North Carolina will compete in the ACC Coastal division.

2009 North Carolina Tar Heels Record Prediction: 9-4
