2012 UCLA Bruins NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2012-13 Football Previews – (Pac Twelve) – UCLA Bruins

The last time the UCLA Bruins won the Rose Bowl was 1984. The Bruins haven’t even been a part of the Rose Bowl since 14 years ago. Rick Neuheisel promised to take the program back to the top, but that never panned out. Jim Mora was brought in to try things a different way in Westwood.

Can this group start getting the ball rolling in the right direction?

You could possibly make the argument that UCLA progressed last year, but the team only went 5-4 in the PAC 12 south, and they were absolutely steamrolled in a joke of a game in the PAC 12 Championship Game. Mora has quite a bit of talent to work with at several positions, but this job comes with plenty of question marks as well.

Team Strengths:

Any list of team strengths has to start with Johnathan Franklin. Franklin is the single best player on this team by a large margin. Despite running behind a poor offensive line, he has put up terrific numbers in his time at UCLA. Franklin averaged almost 6 yards per carry in 2011, and that was when the team struggled to throw the ball much at all. This guy is a stud in the backfield.

UCLA has decided to change to a 3-4 defense this year, and that is largely because the team is stacked at the linebacker position. The Bruins have a plethora of players who are versatile and athletic enough to play just about anywhere in this group. Sophomore Eric Kendricks is the most talented guy in the group, but Patrick Larimore is a great senior leader for the team. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Team Weaknesses:

The Bruins have to find someone who can rush the passer in 2012. UCLA registered only 14 sacks in 2011. There is no one on this defensive front that has proven to be a strong pass rusher. Last year this defensive line allowed the opposing quarterback to feel comfortable at all times. That has to change if the Bruins are going to be successful this year.

The Bruins also have a big question at the quarterback position. Will Kevin Prince or Richard Brehaut be the main man under center this season? True freshman T.J. Millweard could push these guys, but chances are the Bruins will have a quarterback controversy all year long.

The offensive line needs to be better. Franklin made them look good last year, but they don’t do a good job opening holes. In addition, whoever the quarterback is they will need time to throw in what should be a more pass heavy offense.

2012-2013 UCLA Bruins Football Prediction: 6-6

Mora wants this team to turn into more of a passing team, but they have to give Franklin the ball as much as possible to be successful right now. The team’s September 8th game against Nebraska will be an early measuring stick. The defense should be a little better, but the pass rush must improve in a big way. Look for the Bruins to stay right around the .500 mark this year.
