Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: UCLA Bruins

Coach: Rick Neuheisel
2009 Record: 7-6

UCLA Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +30000

The Other College Football Team in Los Angeles wants desperately to even the playing field with cross-town Southern Cal. With USC being slammed with sanctions and slander recently, the door is opening for Neuheisel and crew.

UCLA has several tough road games in 2010 and is switching to a new offense, so it won’t be an easy road in Westwood. However, there is talent on this roster, Neuheisel is bringing in some nice recruits and it is QB Kevin Prince’s second year starting.

Only time will tell in the uber-close Pac-10 conference.

Team Strengths:

Prince has the talent to be in the upper tier of NCAA quarterbacks, and he’s only a sophomore. Prized recruit (and local product) Richard Brehaut offers good depth. The only player on the offensive line that isn’t a returning starter in 2010 is senior Micah Kia, so the experience on the line is nice.

Senior kicker Kai Forbath won the Groza Award in 2009.

Defensively, DE Datone Jones, LB Akeem Ayers and S Rahim Moore – all juniors – are among the cream of the crop at their respective positions in the Pac-10.

Team Weaknesses:

Other than Jones, Ayers and Moore, the Bruins lose a lot on D in 2010. Losing top tackler Reggie Carter and phenomenal defensive tackle Brian Price to the NFL will hurt especially.

For offensive balance, the Bruins must get more production from sophomore RBs Johnathan Franklin and Milton Knox.

2010-2011 UCLA Football Prediction: 7-6

The Bruins roster has talent – with more coming through the recruiting turnstile – but they face a devilish roster in a cutthroat conference. A non-conference road game against Texas certainly doesn’t help matters. UCLA is capable of winning more games, but there’s bound to be a learning curve with the new pistol offense and the many new faces of defense must emerge.

This season, a similar finish to 2009 is probable.
