Quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels led the team’s offensive attack, completing 18 of 27 passes for 219 yards and a pair of scores, adding an additional 38 yards on the ground. Carta-Samuels also caught a pass for a 21 yard gain – he simply did it all for Vanderbilt. All in all, Vanderbilt gained 406 yards of offense, 167 of which came in the fourth quarter. Carta-Samuels’s favorite target in the game was Jonathan Krause, who brought in six balls for 105 yards and a first quarter score. They had trouble early on against a Massachusetts defense that entered allowing more than 522 yards of offense per game, but broke through in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

The Vanderbilt defense wasn’t great, but they got stops when they needed them. Massachusetts quarterback A.J. Doyle completed 20 of 28 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. In total, Vanderbilt limited Massachusetts to just 248 yards of offense.

UAB already had some trouble with an SEC opponent, dropping their game against LSU, 56-17, but Vanderbilt isn’t LSU. When the Blazers took on LSU, they ran into a buzzsaw, as the Tigers’ offense was just hitting its stride on offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The UAB offense had plenty of success against Northwestern State, which led to a 52-28 win. They’ll need that offense to kick into high gear once again as they take a step up in class.

Darrin Reaves led the UAB offense their last time out, turning 17 carries into 178 yards and two scores, including a 50-yard score in the third quarter. Wide receiver Jamarcus Nelson also racked up a pair of scores – a 41-yard reception, and a punt return that he brought back 63 yards. In the end, he finished with 123 all-purpose yards.

The team’s defense had some trouble with Northwestern State’s Garrett Arzenweiler, who accounted for 100 of the team’s 150 rushing yards, including two of the team’s touchdowns.

At first glance, it appears that Vanderbilt is in another class from UAB, but the Commodores just had a ton of trouble putting away a lesser Massachusetts team, and if their offense plays as poorly as it did a week ago, it’s tough to imagine them building up a three-touchdown margin.

The Blazers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games against non-conference opponents.

The play: UAB +20.5
