Troy Trojans 2014 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2014-15 Football Previews – (Sun Belt) – Trojans

Most teams in the Sun Belt have a hard time keeping the same coach for more than a couple years. The Troy Trojans haven’t had that trouble at all. Larry Blakeney is entering his 24th season with the program.

Blakeney has done an amazing job with this program. Troy was perennially the team to beat in the Sun Belt several years ago, but the team has slipped back a bit in the past few seasons.

Only Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech) has been at his current school longer than Blakeney. In addition, Blakeney’s 23 years of service as Troy’s head coach is more than the amount of years coached by all other ten Sun Belt head coaches combined. Troy returns 6 starters on offense and 6 starters on defense from a team that went 6-6 overall last year. Can the Trojans get back to the top of the league?

Team Strengths:

Troy has one of the best offensive lines in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans return 60 career starts along the offensive front, and they also bring in a starting left guard that transferred from Ole Miss (Hudson). Troy is bigger on the front line than most teams in the Sun Belt, and they should be able to win some games with their power up front.

The Trojans have some nice weapons at the wide receiver spot. Bryan Holmes is their top returning receiver, and he averaged 16.9 yards per catch last year. Look for junior college transfer Jarvis Bentley to be a play maker this year. He is a 6’5 receiver with great hands. Troy’s wide receivers should help them win some games this year.

Blakeney and the rest of the Troy coaching staff are top notch. I’m convinced that no other team has a better coaching staff in this conference. They are going to give their players the best opportunity to win every single week.

Team Weaknesses:

In the past few years, Troy has had some really good quarterback play. First it was Levi Brown under center and then it was Corey Robinson for four straight years. Now, the Trojans are left with a lot of question marks about the quarterback position. Brandon Silvers looked good in the spring, but a freshman in a complicated offensive system is always a major risk. This is the biggest concern for Troy in 2014.

The defensive line lost a ton of talent. Tragically, Jadarius Garner passed away in January, and the Trojans need to replace several guys from this group who graduated as well.

The Trojans improved a bit against the run last year, but I think that will change this season as they are much weaker up front.

Troy’s secondary has been bad the last few years, and I see no reason to think that will change this year. Troy allowed a ridiculous 314 yards per game through the air last season.

They lost their two best players from the secondary. Opposing quarterbacks will have a field day.

2014-2015 Troy Trojans Betting Prediction: 6-6

I like Blakeney and this coaching staff, but I don’t see enough talent here for more than six wins. Look for Troy to have a pretty good offense, but they are going to give up a bunch of yards defensively.

It looks like another mediocre season coming for the Trojans.
