Troy Trojans vs. Clemson Tigers Preview

CFB lines have Clemson as 16-point favorites with a total of 55 points.

Troy is led by returning QB Corey Robinson, who led the Trojans to the 11th ranked passing offense last season and while they do have a decent WR corps they are untested after losing 3 of their top WR from last season. With the departed guys RB Shawn Southward may see some more carries this season and in 2010 he averaged a legit 5.4 yards per carry.

On defense the Tigers have to replace 6 starters including DE Da’Quan Bowers, DT Jarvis Jenkins, and S DeAndre McDaniel, who were All ACC last season. Still, the D is very athletic and can get the opposing QB, but stopping the run will be an issue this season and in this game.

Troy has the offense, but the big questions for them in this game are can they play any defense and can they move the ball on the Clemson D?

Clemson had a mediocre offense last season ranking 78th in the nation in passing offense and 79th in rushing offense. Tajh Boyd takes over as the starting QB and the highly touted recruit in 2009 will finally get his chance to shine and me may do so with new offensive coordinator Chad Morris, who led Tulsa to a high powered offense.

Clemson returns 7 of 8 of their top WR’s from last season DeAndre Hopkins, who was a freshman All American last season, and stud TE Dwayne Allen. The Trojans’ secondary returns 3 starters, but they are undersized, only had 14 INT last season, and gave up the most passing yards per game in the Sun Belt Conference. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Clemson RB Andre Ellington was shelved after the 7th game if the season due to injury, but he and Roderick McDowell give the Tigers a formidable 1-2 punch out of the backfield.

The Troy run defense is not that good and they will need a good game from DE Jonathan Massaquoi, as he has to get to Boyd and help stop the run.

A big key in this game is the big Clemson offensive line that returns 4 starters. If they can keep the solid pass rush of Troy out of the backfield and open up holes for the rushing attack they should have no problems winning this game.

Betting Trends

Troy is 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and Clemson is e 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games and has an Under record in 8 of their last 9 games.

I think the Clemson defense will be the key in this game, as they will not allow Troy to light up the scoreboard. However. Clemson is not a high scoring team and while they will win comfortably they will not blow the Trojans out and Troy will cover the spread.

Pick: Troy +16 and the Under
