No. 2 USC Trojans vs. Syracuse Orange Preview

The Trojans easily won their season opener and with the offense they have the Orange will have to come up with a stellar defensive performance. NCAAF odds have the Trojans as HUGE 26-point away favorites with a total of 59.

In their season openers USC beat Hawaii 49-10 while Syracuse lost to Northwestern 42-41.

Neither team covered the spread in their first games of the season.

Last season USC beat Syracuse 38-17 with QB Matt Barkley having a huge games passing for 324 yards with 5 TD and 0 INT. Last week in the loss to Northwestern the Orange gave up 213 passing yards. They have to get to Barkley and pressure him in the pocket and not let him make the big play to the great WR corps he has.

USC only rushed for 81 yards last week in the win over Hawaii and they may want to establish the run more in this game to keep the Syracuse passing attack on the sidelines. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

While the Orange lost last week their QB Ryan Nassib had a HUGE game passing for 470 yards with 4 TD and 1 INT. The Orange had to air it out in the game after getting down big in the first half. He has a solid WR corps led by Marcus Sales and Jeremiah Kobena, who each made big plays in the loss to Northwestern.

The Cuse will also look to run the ball to keep Barkley off the field and if Prince-Tyson Gulley and Jerome Smith cannot run the ball Nassib will have to carry the offense. Last season Nassib went 25 of 37 for 230 yards with 1 TD in the loss to USC.

Even though this game is being played at a neutral site the game is in New Jersey and the Orange may have a little home field advantage, which they will need.

In some betting trends for this non-conference game USC is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games, and they have an Under record of 6-1 in their last 7 non-conference games.

Syracuse is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall, 2-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, and they have an Over record of 6-0 in their last 6 non-conference games.

Jason’s Pick: I think USC will win this game, but Nassib will have another big game and the Orange will make it somewhat close and Syracuse will cover the big spread.
