They never sniff any type of national attention but the Toledo Rockets have been a pretty exciting football team for the past few seasons. However, their high-octane offense, which was 13th in the nation last year, lost some major parts.

Considering that Toledo doesn’t defend well, is disaster in store for 2010?

Team Strengths:

It stings badly saying goodbye to standout quarterback Aaron Opelt but the Rockets still have plenty of offensive talent. Their line is among the conference’s best, returning four starters, and they have a stable of useful running backs. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Morgan Williams, Adonis Thomas, Jake Walker and Darius Reeves could all make big splashes.

The team’s true stud is receiver Eric Page.

He caught 82 balls for 1,159 yards and was big in the return game during his freshman season.

Team Weaknesses:

Quarterback looks like a glaring weakness at the moment. Austin Dantin was supposed to replace Opelt but struggled so much in the spring that coach Tim Beckman opened the position up to competition.

As of press time, none of the four possible candidates had won the job yet.

The Rockets lost their defensive leader, Barry Church, plus four other defensive starters this offseason. It’s not like they play in a juggernaut offensive conference but they could still struggle to keep opponents out of their end zone.

Toledo 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 3-9

Toledo has plenty to get excited about on offense but everything will crumble if they don’t get good quarterbacking. Page can’t be a stud if no one gets him the ball, right? And will the Rockets still run the ball with authority if they face eight-man fronts all year? Defense looks problematic too.

Toledo will bounce back, perhaps as early as next year, but it needs to reload and develop its quarterbacks this year.

2010 should be forgettable.
