Missouri vs ASU Free Week 2 College Football Pick + Betting Preview

Mizzou is a ranked team coming from the Big 12, but they are underdogs in this game against a ASU team that is ranked in the USA top 25 (#23), has a solid team on both sides of the ball, and is a good dark horse pick to win the new Pac 12.

No. 21 Missouri Tigers vs. Arizona State Sun Devils Preview

NCAAF lines have the Sun Devils as 7.5-point favorites with a total of 53.5.

These teams have not met since 1990 and each team is dealing with a slew of injuries to key players.

In their opening games of the season Missouri beat Miami of Ohio 17-6 and ASU crushed UC Davis 48-14.

ASU looked very impressive on offense in their pasting of UC Davis racking up 517 yards of total offense (300 passing 217 rushing) and QB Brock Osweiler was 19/26 and tossed a couple of TD. He has a good corps of receivers, but to get to them the Sun Devils’ offensive line has to keep the solid Mizzou pass rush in check.

The main weakness for the Tigers is their run defense, but they only gave up 76 rushing yards, along with 194 passing yards, in last week’s win. They cannot let the RB’s of the Sun Devils rack up a lot of rushing yards and this is especially the case if the Mizzou offense struggles for the 2nd straight game.

James Franklin takes over under center for the Tigers and he did not have a good game in the win over Miami of Ohio and when asked how he played after the game he stated, “Umm, I probably failed this test today.” His stats were not bad going 17/26 for 129 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT, but he only averaged 5 yards per completion. He must play better in this game and he has to really worry about an ASU pass rush that had 5 sacks last week with 3 coming from star LB Vontaze Burfict. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Even though Franklin did not play well in the Miami game the Mizzou rushing offense did racking up 162 rushing yards.  Franklin was the leading rusher in the game averaging 5.1 yards per carry and RB Henry Josey chimed in for 43 yards on only 6 carries.

Still they head into this game a little shorthanded since the team lost starting RB Kendial Lawrence with a broken leg.

The run defense is the strength of the Sun Devils and the pass defense is their weakness.

They will have to stuff the run and get to Franklin and not allow him to pick apart the suspect ASU secondary.

Betting Trends

Mizzou is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 road games.
ASU is 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 home games, 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10, and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.

Jason’s Pick: ASU has high hopes for the season and they are talented, but I think the Tigers are still the better team. Franklin will have a solid game both in the air and on the ground and the pass rush of the Tigers will wreak havoc in the Sun Devils’ backfield. The Tigers will win this game and cover the spread, as they will move to 2-0 on the season.
