Big 12 2010-2011 Football Previews: Texas Longhorns

Coach: Mack Brown
2009 Record: 13-1

Texas Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +1200

Since the stellar play from campus legend QB Vince Young in 2005, things seem to be constantly ascending for the Texas Longhorns. Last season, things were going perfectly until pivot Colt McCoy went down in the championship game.

The Horns put forth a valiant effort without their leader, but they fell short against a strong Alabama team.

Coach Brown recruits well – among the best – season after season. An influx of talent is getting to be like clockwork in Austin. Sophomore QB Garrett Gilbert (who took the reins when McCoy when down in the title game) is responsible for piloting the offense in 2010. He has some talent in the wings, especially if a feature tailback can emerge from the duo of Tre Newton or senior Vondrell McGee.

This season, Texas has a helluva hurdle in its way in the form of rival Oklahoma. It won’t be clear sailing despite this team having the talent to win a National Title.

Team Strengths:

At 6”3, 225 lbs, receiver Malcolm Williams has the athletic, rangy, Andre Johnson-esque frame to create match-up problems. The offensive line, led by senior Kyle Hix, is going to ramp up the aggression as the ground game is re-emphasized. Texas has its usual studs on the other side of the ball; linebackers Jared Norton and Keenan Robinson will be everywhere.

Most impressive about the 2010 edition, however, is the secondary. Texas has the most depth in the country at cornerback, and FS Blake Gideon is also a playmaker.

Team Weaknesses:

Gilbert proved he has the moxie to start in last year’s title game, but there will still be a significant drop-off from the winningest QB in FBS history in McCoy. The O-line loses a couple bodies and the offense loses another leader to the NFL in WR Jordan Shipley.

Big names like LB Rod Muckleroy, DB Earl Thomas and DL Lamarr Houston depart to the NFL, but Texas is one of the handful of programs that has so many studs waiting in the wings, the damage might be minimal.

2010-2011 Texas Football Prediction: 12-2

As mentioned, Texas is up there with the Floridas and the USCs for stocked talent, allowing them to re-load rather than re-build. However, Texas does just have 12 returning starters and the 2010 schedule isn’t seamless. The Sooners and Nebraska particularly stand out as tough customers.

It should be a decent season and likely a January bowl game for the Horns, but a repeat of 2009 would indeed be a plus.
