2011-2012 Football Previews –  Big 12 – Texas A&M Aggies

Mike Sherman is still just 19-19 in his tenure at Texas A&M, but the program is on the rise after an impressive turnaround in the middle of 2010. Expectations are much higher this year, but can the Aggies live up to the hype?

The Aggies won six of their last seven games in 2010 after Sherman replaced Jerrod Johnson with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill seemed to be the leader the Aggies needed to get over the hump. The highlight of 2010 was the win over their bitter rival Texas.

Head Coach: Mike Sherman

Every single year you can count on the Aggies having what is probably the best home field advantage in the Big 12 at Kyle Field. There is a good reason why they call their fans “The 12th Man.”

Kyle Field holds 83,002 and every week the place is literally rocking with excitement. The coaches and players enter this season with a little extra optimism.

Team Strengths:

Christine Michael and Cyrus Gray form a terrific tailback tandem that should dominate most defenses. Michael is back from a broken leg injury in 2010, and I expect him to be featured in a lot of the Aggies offensive sets.

Gray is as quick as you’ll find, and he has the ability to take it the distance every time he touches the ball.

Jeff Fuller is one of the best wide receivers in the conference and he gives Tannehill a reliable target on a consistent basis. If that isn’t enough, the rest of the Aggies receiving corps is amazing as well. Ryan Swope and Uzoma Nwauchukwa both have the ability to change the game with their skills on the outside.

This is certainly the best receiving corps in the Big 12, and they are one of the best in the nation.

The linebackers are athletic for the Aggies. Garrick Williams and Sean Porter are athletic and they should thrive in the new 3-4 defense of Tim DeRuyter. The front seven for Texas A&M will have more athleticism than most units in the Big 12. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Team Weaknesses:

The Aggies are a bit thin in the secondary. The defensive scheme is set up to pressure the quarterback early and often, but this secondary will likely give up a lot of yards if the front seven don’t get to the quarterback quickly.

While the front seven is still very good, it will be next to impossible to replace a guy like Von Miller. There was a good reason Miller went right at the beginning of the NFL Draft, and I expect this front seven to get a little less heat on the opposing quarterback.

The Aggies special teams units need to improve. Last year they generally lost the field position battle, and when they get into a tight game that could easily be the difference between a win and a loss.

2011-2012 Texas A&M Football Prediction: 9-4

The Aggies start the season out with a couple games they should win, but their game against Arkansas on October 1 will be a great measuring stick for this team. Tannehill needs to take good care of the football, and they must stay balanced on offense if they are going to be successful.

This is a team that tends to get a little pass happy, but they have two very good running backs that need to be utilized this year.

Don’t overlook home games against Baylor and Missouri, since both of these teams will likely be dangerous this season. I like Texas A&M to finish just about where they did last year.
