Texas A&M Aggies 2014 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2014-15 Football Predictions – (SEC) – Aggies

I would have said that Florida’s Tim Tebow was the most celebrated college football player in a generation – that is, until Johnny Football came along.

This year, Texas A&M must replace transcendent QB Johnny Manziel. Well, really there’s no replacing him, but there will be a new starter under center in College Station in 2014.

How the rest of the team adapts post-Manziel and how some young players progress with a year under their belts will tell the tale of how successful this year’s A&M squad will be.

Last year, A&M’s style was to allow a million points, but score a million +1. Without Johnny Football and his unique talents, the Aggies’ defense must get its act together.

Allowing 475.8 yards and 32.2 points per game will not cut the mustard this year.

The good news is along with the boosted profile of having Manziel plus the school’s recent move to the SEC, Coach Sumlin and his staff have been doing some great recruiting. There’s plenty to stock the cupboard with at A&M.

Let’s look at the strengths and weaknesses of this Aggies team.

Team Strengths

It’s true the Aggies will be breaking in some young faces on offense, but the transition will be made easier with an exceptional offensive line. Led by senior LT and likely high NFL draft pick Cedric Ogbuehi, it could be the conference’s best O-line. Junior center Mike Matthews (older brother Jake was a high first-rounder in this year’s NFL Draft) should also stand out and join a celebrated lineage of Matthews football players.

The run game should be great – with a young QB, the Aggies will lean on it more in ’14. Oregon transfer Tra Carson joins speed demon Trey Williams to form a fearsome duo that will have some aforementioned huge holes to run through. The Aggies can also roll out former five-star recruit and Oklahoma transfer Brandon Williams.

The defense wasn’t good last year, but it’ll be made better this time around with a deep, multi-talented defensive line; Texas A&M can constantly rotate guys on the front four.

Junior P Drew Kaser is one of the nation’s elite at his position.

Team Weaknesses

In short, no Manziel. The starting pivot could be true freshman Kyle Allen or sophomore Kenny Hill, but Allen should probably win the job. May as well start fresh, I suppose.

There was a lot of underwhelming performances in the defensive back seven for the Aggies last year. Defensive co-ordinator Mark Snyder can hold out hope because there was so much youth last year, but these players must make a leap now.

Sophomore LBs Jordan Mastrogiovanni and Darian Claiborne have to step up.

Senior CB Deshazor Everett is great, but the rest of the secondary is a bit hairy. Junior CB De’Vante Harris, the starter across from Everett, must tackle more consistently. Seniors Floyd Raven and Howard Matthews need to show something, also.

It’s promising that an improved D-line should disrupt things and thus make the secondary’s job easier.

2014-15 Texas A&M Football Prediction: 7-5

With the talent currently onboard and the recruits rolling in, it seems A&M are gearing up to make another run a year or two from now. They can still be quite good in the present. If Allen or Hill proves to be a strong starting pivot, the Aggies won’t be fun to play.

The offensive line should manhandle opponents, the run game is proven and A&M also has tons of dynamic youth to catch passes (especially true freshmen Ricky Seals-Jones and Speedy Noil – keep your eyes peeled for them).

The defense is a work in progress, but you have to like the frosh Texas A&M is bringing in to help.

Unfortunately, A&M has a murderous late-season slate that includes road games to Alabama and Auburn, and a game against LSU.
