CFB Football Previews – Maryland Terrapins vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

It appears no one’s sleeping on Georgia Tech anymore. Last week’s 45-35 win over N.C. State vaulted the Yellow Jackets to the No. 13 national ranking. This week, they’ll try to break into the top 10 against a Maryland team desperate for a big conference-game win.

Maryland Terrapins (2-2)

For a team many handicappers expected to contend in the ACC, myself included, Maryland has been pretty disappointing so far this season. The Terps got the job done at home versus a shorthanded Miami squad in Week 1 before losing a close one to West Virginia at home and getting utterly embarrassed 38-7 by Temple at home.

Last week against Towson was supposed to be a walk in the park following Maryland’s bye. The 28-3 scores suggests it was but Towson actually outgained the Terps 378 to 335.

Maryland has to be – and should be – better everywhere. Danny O’Brien was supposed to be the team’s best player but has more interceptions than touchdown throws this season; at least he threw for two late scores against Towson.

Really, it’s the Terps’ defense that is really hurting them. It ranks 91st in the nation and is 90th with 177.5 rushing yards per game. That’s a frightening stat with Georgia Tech next on the schedule.

(13) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-0)

One after another, Georgia Tech has run through its opponents this season – literally. Sticking with their triple-option attack, the Yellow Jackets lead the nation with 378.8 rushing yards per game and are second in total offense and points per game. Defensively, they didn’t exactly stymie N.C. State last week, but the “D” did enough to let the offense take over. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Tevin Washington, Orwin Smith, David Sims – name your Georgia Tech player and he’s had a big offensive game. Teams can gameplan around stopping one player because it’s the system, not so much the personnel, that makes the Yellow Jackets so effective.

As Georgia Tech’s 4-0-1 ATS record this season shows, teams haven’t figured its offense out. No one has come within a touchdown of beating them.

The pick:

Even a struggling O’Brien may be the best quarterback Georgia Tech has faced this season. But Maryland’s woeful defense is in for a very long day. Expect this game to zoom OVER the total and for Georgia Tech’s offense to help them cover the spread.
