SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Tennessee Volunteers

Coach: Derek Dooley
2009 Record: 7-6

Tennessee Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

The Lane Kiffin era at Tennessee sure didn’t last long did it? Let’s just say Kiffin is far from a popular guy in the Knoxville area. Now it is Derek Dooley’s turn to try to get things going in the right direction for the Volunteers.

The schedule that is in front of Tennessee for this season and the lack of returning talent will make it difficult to evaluate Dooley in his first year.

The potential for a very bad year is definitely there if the players don’t buy into his system right away.

The inexperience of this Tennessee Volunteers team really is striking.

They have lost many of their best players on both sides of the ball and will be fielding a team with plenty of athletes that have proved nothing at the college level. The lack of a star on this 2010 squad is also quite amazing considering how many of them Tennessee has produced in recent memory.

Team Strengths:

The wide receivers and tight ends are definitely the biggest strength of this Volunteer team. Luke Stocker is a terrific tight end that could have a breakout season in 2010. Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore are both experienced receivers who know how to move the chains.

Both of the defensive ends that will start are great at rushing the passer, which should help take some of the pressure off the rest of the defense.

Chris Walker and Ben Martin can both get around the end quickly, and I expect they will make some serious noise in the backfield this year.

Team Weaknesses:

The quarterback spot is the most obvious weakness on this Tennessee team. Matt Simms looks as if he will probably be the starting quarterback, but there are plenty of questions as to how he will fare in this role. There is no proven quarterback and the depth at the position is also lacking.

The Volunteers run defense was 65th in the nation last year, and I don’t expect it to be any better this year. The defensive tackles are undersized and they have trouble clogging up the running lanes.

The offensive line and the tailbacks are both very inexperienced. The line has only one returning starter and neither of the running backs that are expected to carry the ball often has rushed for more than 100 yards in a season.

2010-2011 Tennessee Football Prediction: 5-7

Derek Dooley has an extremely tough job ahead of him this year at Tennessee. I believe the fans know that this is a long-term project, so one bad year won’t put Dooley on the hot seat. The schedule is difficult and the Volunteers inexperience is bound to hurt them badly against teams like Alabama, Florida, and LSU.

The key game on the schedule may be Ole Miss game at home on November 13th. The schedule gets easier at the end of the year, but if they don’t upset someone, they’ll already be out of bowl contention.

The Volunteers are likely to have a long year in 2010.
