Temple Owls vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Preview

Last week Penn State played good run defense in their win over Navy and they will have to do so again facing Temple, who only rank 112th in the nation in passing yards per game. NCAAF lines have Penn State as 7-point home favorites with a total of 43.

One thing Temple has going for them is they will be well rested for this game, as they had last Saturday off.

In their last games Penn State beat Navy 34-7 while Temple lost to Maryland 36-27.

On the season Temple is 1-1 ATS with an Over/Under record of 1-0 and Penn State is 2-1 ATS with an Over/Under record of 0-3.

Temple QB Chris Coyer passed for 178 yards in the loss to Maryland, but he was only 7/18 and he was picked off. He does not have a very good WR corps and the Owls will have to run the ball and play good D to pull off the upset. Coyer is the Owls 2nd leading rusher and while 5’5″ dynamo Matt Brown leads the team in rushing he only had 31 rushing yards d averaged a paltry 3.1 yards per carry.

Temple has a good chance to run the ball well, as the Penn State rushing defense only ranks 64th in the nation and they gave up 255 rushing yards to Navy last week. Still, Temple will have to be careful with the ball facing a PSU defense that forced 4 turnovers in the Navy game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Penn State QB Matthew McGloin was stellar in the Navy game passing for 231 yards with 4 TD and 0 INT. Temple and their 22nd ranked pass defense really has to key on PSU WR Allen Robinson (322 yards 4 TD), who is 6’3″ and if the Owls can shut him down they may be in good shape since the next leading Nittany Lions WR only has 120 receiving yards.

Penn State has not ran the ball well this season and their 2 leading rushers have rushed for less than 90 yards and each is averaging less than 4 yards per carry. However, they may be able to run the ball in this game since the Owls rushing defense only ranks 81st in the nation.

In some betting trends for this non-conference game Temple is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall, 13-5 ATS in their last 18 road games, and they have an Over record of 6-0 in their last 6 games.

Penn State is 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 games overall, 2-7 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games, and they have an Under record of 13-2-1 in their last 16 games.

Jason’s Pick: Have to go with Penn State in this game, as they still have a pretty good team and after last week’s win they are back on track and they will beat Temple and cover the spread.
