WAC 2010-2011 Football Previews: USC Trojans

Coach: Lane Kiffin
2009 Record: 9-4

USC Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: OFF (On Probation)

Southern Cal’s storied football program finally looked human in 2009. The offense had to deal with replacing prolific QB Mark Sanchez with a freshman (Matt Barkley) and with RB Stafon Johnson’s terrifying weight room injury (he had his windpipe crushed, though eventually made a recovery).

There’s also been buzz about unethical recruiting practices in the past several seasons under former head coach Pete Carroll. The Trojans also decided to hire the youthful, highly divisive Lane Kiffin as the new head coach.

Basically, the Trojans have a lot to prove in an airtight Pac-10 conference in 2010.

This is Barkley’s team to command; he must improve on his 15-14 TD/INT ratio and his 2,734 yards passing – pedestrian by USC standards. There is the talent available to dominate, as always in Los Angeles.

Kiffin and Barkley must apply it appropriately.

Team Strengths:

Even with the departures of Johnson and Joe McKnight, Southern Cal has an absurdly talented backfield. Beefy senior (5”11, 235 lbs) Allen Bradford will probably start, but he has gifted junior Marc Tyler, senior C.J. Gable and top frosh Dillon Baxter behind him.

The Trojans have the best center in the NCAA on the O-line in senior Kris O’Dowd and the defense is highlighted by tackle Jurrell Casey and junior Mike ’backer Chris Galippo.

Team Weaknesses:

The Trojans are still highly skilled, but they are no longer leaps and bounds better than other top programs like they were three or four years ago. The entire defensive secondary consists of new starters and there is also greenness on the offensive line.

Barkley needs to step it up this season and beyond to have the usual Heisman whispers as is custom for a USC pivot and Kiffin needs to prove his coaching acumen can live up to his ability to be an egotistical asshole.

2010-2011 USC Football Prediction: 10-3

USC ought to win its first five games, but the second half of the schedule is quite daunting with games at Stanford and Arizona and with Oregon coming to L.A. Memorial on Oct. 30. If Barkley evolves and new playmakers emerge at receiver and on defense, the Trojans should win the conference.

If not, they could look nearly as ordinary as last season.
