Coach: Jim Leavitt
2008 Record: 8-5

South Florida is something of a johnny-come-lately program — they didn’t even have a football team until 1997.

However, in recent seasons Leavitt has gotten this program in line. At one point last season, USF was ranked #10 in the nation. In 2009, the Bulls could ride a veteran quarterback and one of the best D-lines in the NCAA to further success.

Senior QB Matt Grothe is around for one more kick at the bucket. He doesn’t have NFL size (6 foot, 205 lbs) so he seems perfectly suited to the college game. He’ll have Eddie George-esque RB Mike Ford (6″2, 225) to help him.

The defense is fuelled by a fantastic defensive line and is buttressed by several strong JUCO transfers.

Jerome Murphy and Nate Allen provide veteran leadership in the secondary.

Team Strengths
Grothe can make plays with his arm or his feet. D-linemen George Selvie, Terrell McClain, Aaron Harris and JUCO Jason Pierre-Paul all bring something original and crucial to the table. They should spook opposing pivots consistently.

Senior linebacker Kion Wilson should also thoroughly disrupt opponents’ game plans.

Team Weaknesses
There is not much experience in the trenches on offense. Tackle Daron Rose signed with Florida State a couple years ago, but other than that there could be some growing pains up front. ‘Tis a good thing indeed that Grothe is both fleet-footed and experienced. Accordingly, Ford should take — and give — a pounding.

Selvie is perpetually an All-American and a first-team all-conference selection. He could set the tone for USF’s chances in 2009. Playing in Tallahassee versus the ‘Noles on Sept. 26 should be daunting and the Bulls also travel to Rutgers and Pittsburgh.

All things considered, you could conceive booking USF for a high finish in the rankings and in the conference.

2009 South Florida Bulls Record Prediction: 10-3
