CFB Football Previews – Florida State Seminoles vs Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Ouch, Florida State. Wasn’t this the fifth-ranked team in the nation entering the start of 2011? Instead, the disappointing Seminoles find themselves 2-2 entering a Week-6 battle with Wake Forest. Hard to believe the Demon Deacons have a superior record.

Then again, the Seminoles’ losses came to Oklahoma and Clemson, the No. 3 and No. 8 teams in the nation, so they might still be better than their record indicates. Will FSU make a statement this week or will its misery continue?

(23) Florida State Seminoles (2-2)

Florida State may be the world’s angriest football team entering Week 6. The two consecutive losses were enough to make them furious. Add in that starting quarterback E.J. Manuel will likely return from injury and that this team had a bye to think about things and it’s clear that FSU will be fired up and ready to unleash hell this Saturday.

Despite the two defeats, this team hasn’t played poorly. The Seminoles remain one of the country’s best defensive teams, ranking 14th against the pass, 15th against the run and eighth overall. It was interesting to see that Tajh Boyd and Clemson had better luck passing on them than Landry Jones and Oklahoma, though.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3-1)

After just four games, Wake Forest has equalled its 2010 win total. Demon Deacons fans are rejoicing. Florida State will surely be a step up in competition this week but, at the same time, it’s not like Wake Forest has beaten nothing but FCS nobodies. It took down N.C. State in Week 2 and beat Boston College 27-19 on the road last week. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Deacs have a top-20 defense so far this season and, in Tanner Price, it looks like they have a quarterback who can play. He’s thrown for 1,119 yards with seven touchdowns and two picks through four starts.

The pick:

As much as I respect Wake Forest’s performance so far this season, as much as I expect them to win a few more games, I think Deacs have reached their “reality check” moment in the schedule. They’ve beaten some competitive teams but they haven’t faced a team as talented as FSU yet, both offensively and defensively.

Look for FSU to clamp down on Price and limit Wake Forest’s 16th-ranked passing game. Also, even if Manuel can’t play, the Seminoles have moved the ball with Clint Trickett, so they’ll get their points and cover.
