All eyes will be on the SEC this season because it houses the defending national champions. Alabama looks like a powerhouse again since its centerpiece, Mark Ingram, returns to run over the competition again. Can anyone dethrone the Crimson Tide?

Naturally, Alabama has the top odds to win the conference at +100. It’s not that the Crimson Tide didn’t lose some key contributors. All-American linebacker Rolando McClain is NFL bound after the Oakland Raiders took him eighth overall this spring. But the pros greatly outweigh the cons.

The nation’s best rushing duo is back. Ingram is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and he has good support in the backfield with Trent Richardson, who topped 100 yards and scored twice in the BCS title game. Julio Jones is an elite wideout, quarterback Greg McElroy is at least a solid game manager and even sophomore Dre Kirkpatrick could break out to become one of college football’s top defensive backs.

Florida (+250) is close behind but has major mountains to climb after losing Tim Tebow, whom many pundits consider the greatest college football player of all time. However, John Brantley is no slouch. He’ll take snaps behind one of the country’s best lines and could surprise. But the loss of Tebow and some major subtractions from their pass rush tell me Florida needs a year to reload.

What about Auburn (+500)? The Tigers were a respectable 8-5 last year and pushed Alabama as hard as anyone, hanging in for a 26-21 loss in the Iron Bowl. But their 13th-ranked running game took a hit when Ben Tate declared for the NFL draft and their “D” allowed 30 or more points in seven different games last season. Not sure if they’re ready for prime time yet, either.

Georgia is next at +650. But the Bulldogs’ defense was already weak last year and it lost a handful of starters to the NFL this past offseason. Then again, the offense makes Georgia an interesting sleeper. Redshirt freshman Aaron Murray has good tools and a truly elite target in A.J. Green. Maybe the Bulldogs will be better than expected.

Arkansas, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee round out the list with odds of +800. But I’m surprised to see Arkansas lumped in with that group given the positive press I’ve read about them this offseason. The Razorbacks have a behemoth and potential NFL first-rounder at quarterback in 6’7” Ryan Mallett. He posted 3,600-plus passing yards and a 30:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season. But Arkansas must improve its pass defense (99th in the nation) to be taken seriously.

THE PICK

I think Alabama wins the SEC in a walk this year. I’m surprised its odds aren’t better. It kept all its key offensive pieces from its championship team and has some up-and-comers on “D” to replace its departing starters. Arkansas is my favorite sleeper of the bunch.
