There are plenty of interesting storylines in college football for 2010 but, I have to admit, I’m probably most interested in the SEC this year. If Tim Tebow really was the greatest player ever to play college football, how will Florida fare in his absence? Is the door wide open for Alabama to repeat as national champs?

Here’s a predicted standings breakdown for the SEC.

SEC EAST DIVISION

1. Florida
2. Georgia
3. South Carolina
4. Tennessee
5. Kentucky
6. Vanderbilt

No disrespect to South Carolina and Tennessee, but only Florida and Georgia intrigue me in the SEC East. As good as Tebow was, bettors have to give the rest of the Gators a bit more respect. This is still an outstanding football program. It still has a superb offensive line and that should give new starting pivot John Brantley time to think and make plays. Interestingly enough, I think it’s Florida’s weakened pass rush that could be the bigger headache.

Georgia should win plenty of games – and they will be shootouts. Even as a redshirt freshman, Aaron Murray looks like he’ll be a playmaker. A.J. Green will make things easy for him catching passes too. But Georgia won’t hang with the SEC’s elite unless it plays better defense in 2010. I’m not sure it will.

SEC WEST DIVISION

1. Alabama
2. Arkansas
3. Auburn
4. LSU
5. Mississippi St.
6. Ole Miss

The West looks far more intriguing to me in that I see way more teams playing good football. At the same time, though, I still rank Alabama way above any other team in the whole conference. The Crimson Tide have so much going for them – especially on offense, where all the cornerstones of their national championship team return.

Mark Ingram is a workhorse running back and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. He returns to a talented backfield that also boasts a great change-of-pace runner in Trent Richardson. Greg McElroy is a caretaker in some people’s eyes but no one can deny that he does that job well.

He has a phenomenal downfield target in Julio Jones, who could be an impact player in the NFL one day soon.

Sure, the “D” lost some important pieces, but it also returns some monsters. Marcell Dareus was the BCS title game MVP and returns to terrorize quarterbacks. Kerry Murphy is also back at defensive tackle. The Crimson Tide will be just fine.

Not everyone will agree with me but I think Arkansas could be Alabama’s best competition in 2010.

Is Ryan Mallett the nation’s top prospect at quarterback? Last season certainly suggests as much. He threw for over 3,600 yards and 30 touchdowns.

On “D,” the Razorbacks forced the sixth most turnovers in the country last year, but all that gambling hurt more than it helped. Arkansas was 99th in the country last year and won’t make any real noise unless it improves in that regard.

Auburn got itself noticed last season when it almost dethroned Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Even without Ben Tate, its running game should remain strong thanks to a stellar line and the addition of Cameron Newton, a threat with his feet, at quarterback. But these guys allowed 27.5 points per game last year. Eight starters return but the “D” was so bad in 2010 that I wonder if that’s a good thing.

SEC East champion: Florida. Maybe Tebow’s departure will be a blessing in disguise for the program. The Gators can show us that they’re far from a one-man team.

SEC West champion: Alabama. In a walk. They’re still a powerhouse and I think their competition is weaker than last year’s (aside from the improving Arkansas).

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Alabama 37, Florida 17
