San Jose State, on the other hand, took down Sacramento State last weekend in shut-out fashion. Now, the Spartans travel to Stanford Stadium to take on a team that has been a powerhouse the past few seasons.

They opened up the 2012 season against one another, and the Spartans gave the Cardinal quite a scare when it was all said and done.
San Jose State kept it close a year ago and lost by just three points.

It was Stanford’s first game in three years without Andrew Luck, and the Spartans took advantage. This time around, the Cardinal feel good about their situation behind center, and San Jose State has to be ready for it.

Following the Week 1 victory, the Spartans have won eight games in a row. They’ve won 12 of their last 13, and senior quarterback David Fales will look to keep the momentum alive. He was the most accurate passer in the country a year ago, and he’ll try to add to his resume with a solid performance against a defense that loves to rush the quarterback. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Unfortunately for San Jose State, it will be without starting running back Tyler Ervin. He left the game in Week 1 with an injury, and while Jason Simpson stepped up in his place, it was against a completely different defense than he’ll see this time around.

Stanford

Stanford feels good about its quarterback situation. Last season, Kevin Hogan look over for Josh Nunes part way through the year, and closed out the season 5-0, including wins over four ranked opponents. Having confidence in the QB is always crucial, but it’s especially important for this crew, as there are new faces at receiver, running back and tight end.

Defensively, this team is as dangerous as it comes. Last season, Stanford was first in sacks, second in tackles for loss and 11th in points allowed per contest. Most of the defenders are back, which means this team is loaded with not just talent, but depth as well.

Against San Jose State, don’t expect a lot of points to go on the board from the opponent. The Spartans kept it close in 2012, but the Cardinal are stronger on both sides of the ball, and there’s little reason to believe they won’t walk away with the victory.

The big question becomes whether or not the Spartans can make it respectable. San Jose State is far from a bad team, and it’ll go on to have a good year. Unfortunately for them, the Stanford defense is just too dominant. Expect a low-scoring game, especially coming from the Spartans.

O/U Pick: Under
