WAC Conference Football Previews: San Jose St.

Head Coach: Mike Macintyre
2009 Record: 2-10

San Jose St. Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +800000

Dick Tomey had some good runs with turning around the San Jose State football program, but his career didn’t end on a high note with a 2-10 campaign in 2009. Mike Macintyre and his staff now need to try to get this team to regroup and get things going back in the right direction. The Spartans were expected to be decent a year ago, but won just once in conference play.

There are several players returning this year, but no players that will provide that big spark. It is very likely that this team will have another long year, because the talent level just isn’t on par with other schools in this conference.

Team Strengths:

The running backs are quite skilled. Lamon Muldrow and Brandon Rutley are both players that have the ability to do some damage on the ground.

Macintyre’s system will definitely allow them more chances to show their ability in 2010.

Duke Ihenacho was a first team all WAC player in 2009, and he provides a strong back line for this defense.

Kyle Otten looks like he has the potential to do some damage in the new system this team will run. Otten is a tight end who can catch the ball on a consistent basis and he will likely see increased action.

Team Weaknesses:

On a team as bad as this one, you really could list countless weaknesses, but there are a few that really stand out.

The defense is absolutely horrible against the run. San Jose State was second to last in all of college football in stopping the run last year. The front line gets beat off the ball on a continuous basis and the linebackers have proven unable to stuff the lanes as well.

The quarterback position has a whole lot of questions right now as to who the starter may be. Jordan La Secla started last year, but his decision making wasn’t very good. There just aren’t many good options here for the Spartans.

San Jose St. 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 2-11

This San Jose State team just isn’t very good at all. The defense is one of the worst in the nation, and the offense is extremely inconsistent.

The new coaching staff will implement quite a few changes, which could cause further confusion at least at the beginning of the year. The schedule is extremely tough, as they travel to both Alabama and Wisconsin to start off the year.

This team might not win a game in the WAC conference at all unless they beat New Mexico State on the road. It will be another very long year for the fans of the San Jose State Spartans.
