Mountain West Football Previews: San Diego St.

Head Coach: Brady Hoke
2009 Record: 4-8

San Diego St. Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +70000

Brady Hoke is entering his second season as head coach at San Diego State after putting together an impressive run at Ball State. The Aztecs did improve under Hoke in their first season, but the history at the program has been extremely weak. San Diego State hasn’t played in a bowl game since 1998.

Hoke and his team have made it their goal to change that, but their defense and lack of a running game are currently keeping them from becoming more of a contender.

The Aztecs defense gave up less than 25 points only three times in 2009, which led to them losing quite a few close games. In addition, the passing game was great and the running game was pathetic in 2009.

If they are going to improve, they’ll need a better level of balance this season.

Team Strengths:

The wide receivers are very good for the Aztecs. DeMarco Simpson and Vincent Brown will be one of the best duos in the Mountain West this year. Ryan Lindley shouldn’t have trouble finding open receivers as long as he has time to throw the ball.

The defense is a 3-3-5, but all three of the defensive linemen are back and all of them are upperclassmen. The team should improve in its ability to stop the run as well as pressure the quarterback this season.

Team Weaknesses:

The rushing attack at San Diego State is nearly non-existent. A freshman is listed as the first string tailback going into 2010. This team was just 116th in the nation in rushing yards a year ago. The lack of any kind of rushing game really keeps Lindley and the passing game from being something special.

The secondary isn’t very good. San Diego State allowed many of their Mountain West foes to rack up the passing yards last year, and they were unable to force turnovers.

This team hasn’t been strong with the football at all. San Diego State was last in the Mountain West in turnover margin a year ago at minus 10. If that happens again this year, it will be a long season.

2010-2011 SDSU Aztecs Football Predictions: 6-7

I think the team will improve a bit from a year ago, and they may even get into a bowl game for the first time in years. The key games will be the home game against Air Force and the road game at Wyoming. Wyoming killed San Diego State with a last quarter comeback a year ago, and those two are likely to be battling for position in the Mountain West standings this year too. Lindley and the offense will be good.

The defense will still be weak, but it will be improved enough to get to six wins.
