Conference USA Football Previews: Rice

Head Coach: David Bailiff
2009 Record: 2-10

Rice Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +500000

Two years ago the Rice Owls were 10-3 and one of the best teams in Conference USA, but last year they fell off in a big way and finished 2-10. Last year’s team actually gave up more points than anyone in college football. A team that gives up 43 points per game, as Rice did in 2009, simply isn’t going to win football games.

The team will have more talent on offense and is likely to score more points, but unless they get some significant improvement from the defense they will still lose a ton of games.

Some improved depth and new faces will help Rice certainly upgrade their team in 2010, but just how much better can they be? This team averaged only 18 points per game and allowed 43 points per game a year ago, so they have a long ways to go!

Team Strengths:

The running game should be much better than it was in 2009. Sam McGuffie is now eligible, and I fully expect him to be a big play maker for the Owls. McGuffie transferred in from Michigan, and was a highly touted high school running back.

The offensive line in front of him will all return, and I would expect McGuffie will find some room to run. In addition, Tyler Smith and Charles Ross will see time in the backfield. Rice is very strong at the running back spot this year.

The two defensive ends are both solid for the Rice defense. In fact, the entire defensive line should be a bit improved so the Owls will likely fare better against the run in 2010.

Team Weaknesses:

The Rice Owls defense is absolutely terrible, which is a huge problem. The secondary is one of the worst in the entire country and they will continue to get lit up by any decent quarterback they face. The secondary allowed 28 touchdowns through the air a year ago. Most of the secondary is back, but when they have fared so poorly it might not be a good thing.

The Rice Owls passing game could struggle this year. Nick Fanuzzi will likely be improved as a quarterback, but there just isn’t any depth at wide receiver on this team. Patrick Randolph is a solid receiver, but this team will have trouble running three or four wide sets because they just don’t have depth at the receiver position.

2010-2011 Rice Owls Football Predictions: 3-9

The Rice Owls have an extremely difficult schedule to start the season. I would not be a bit surprised to see this team start out with at least six or seven straight losses. They finish the season with four winnable games, so they’ll need to close strong.

I think the running game will power the offense to much higher levels of production, but this defense is just too bad for Rice to consistently win football games.
