This is the first Big Ten game of the season as the rest of the conference is wrapping up their non-conference schedules. And for the first time in 6 years, the Boilermakers will begin conference play before finishing their non-conference schedule.

This is also the earliest Wisconsin has started conference play since 1982. With both Maryland and Rutgers set to join the conference next year, the meeting between these two teams could be fewer and far between.

Purdue

Purude is off to a rocky start this season, falling to 1-2 after a disappointing 8 point loss to Notre Dame where the Boilermakers had led for 3 quarters.. The team’s only win has come at home versus Indiana State in a 20-14 game, making new coach Darrell Hazell’s seat luke warm.

Senior quarterback Rob Henry has thrown for 567 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season along with 3 interceptions. His leading receiver, Junior Akeem Hunt, has 115 yards receiving and a touchdown…and he’s the running back. He’s rushed for 125 yards on the season with no trips to the end zone.

The Purdue defense has been tenacious. Defensive ends Bruce Gaston and Ryan Russell each have 2 sacks on the season to along with Gaston’s 3.5 tackles for loss and Russell’s 4 tackles for loss. Frankie Williams has 13 tackles on the season, including 1 for loss, 1 interception, 3 passes defended and a blocked kick so far this season.

Raheem Mostert and Akeem Hunt have been lethal on special teams. Hunt has returned a kickoff for a touchdown already this season after an 867 yard tally from last year, including a 100 yard return. Mostert was a freshman when he led all FBS teams in return yardage in 2011. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Wisconsin

After a disappointing 2 point loss at Arizona State last week, Wisconsin is looking to come home for the first time this year under new head coach Gary Andersen. They are also looking to become the 3rd team in Big Ten history to win the conference 3 straight years.

The loss of running back Montee Ball was no issue, as he is easily replaced by his backup, Senior James White. White already has 297 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season and he’s NOT the leading rusher – sophomore Melvin Gordon is. Last week alone, Gordon had 193 yards – putting his season total at 477 with 4 touchdowns.

Even more ridiculous is the third head in the 3 headed attack, freshman Corey Clement, who has 251 yards and 3 touchdowns on the year. Not to mention top receiver Senior Jared Abbrederis, who has 271 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns on the season.

Betting Trends

•Badgers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing more than 450 total yards in their previous game.
•Badgers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
•Badgers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games on fieldturf.
•Boilermakers are 1-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
•Boilermakers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
•Boilermakers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games on fieldturf.

Prediction: Wisconsin -24

It seems like a lofty goal, but Wisconsin can cover the 24 points. While Purdue’s defense has put up good numbers thus far, it is because of the fact that the offense gets off the field so quickly. Wisconsin’s run game alone will win this one.
