Big Ten 2010-2011 Football Previews: Purdue Boilermakers

Coach: Danny Hope
2009 Record: 4-8

Purdue Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: 25-1

Purdue had a very strange year in 2009. The team dominated the stats in quite a few games, but ended up losing quite a few of them because of turnovers and last minute costly errors.

The offense was very good last year, but the defense didn’t hold up its end for the majority of the season.

This year the Purdue team is expected to be slightly improved, despite losing quarterback Joey Elliot. The team has a variety of options at both the quarterback and running back spot and they have solid skill position players on offense.

Danny Hope has the team believing they can do more this year after they shocked Ohio State and won four of their last six games last season.

Team Strengths:

The Boilermakers boast a very strong front seven on the defensive side of the football. The linebackers are experienced and talented. I would fully expect to see this team be able to put an increasing amount of pressure on quarterbacks this year.

The offense is talented and deep at almost every position. The quarterback spot hasn’t been completely determined yet, but I would expect Robert Marve to get plenty of playing time. Marve transferred from Miami and was named the best offensive newcomer at the Spring game. Keith Smith is a terrific slot receiver and the backfield should be fine with McBurse and Siller getting the majority of the carries.

Though the kicker doesn’t usually get a lot of attention, Carson Wiggs is a great one. Wiggs propelled Purdue to their victory over Ohio State and has already set a school record for the longest field goal with a 59 yard boot.

Team Weaknesses:

The Boilermakers don’t have a lot of weaknesses, but the weakness they do have is a glaring one. The defensive secondary at Purdue is extremely suspect. The Boilermakers were unable to stop solid passing games last year, and in today’s Big Ten, that is a real problem. Last year’s secondary was bad, and all four of the starters graduated, so things could actually get worse this year.

The Boilermakers will also need some other receivers to step up and help Keith Smith shoulder the load, especially with a new quarterback that will likely struggle at times in this offense.

2010-2011 Purdue Football Prediction: 7-6

The Boilermakers get a solid amount of help from their schedule this year, which is quite easy for Big Ten standards. They don’t have to play Penn State or Iowa in the conference and outside of Notre Dame, no one in their non-conference schedule is impressive at all. A key game for this team could be the Illinois game on October 30. The Boilers need to go on the road and beat teams that aren’t very good like the Fighting Illini. I think the offense will be good, though turnovers could continue to be a problem. The defense may be improved a bit, but they’ll still get shredded by solid passing games.

Danny Hope’s team should show some improvement this year.
