Red Raiders vs. Mountaineers Gambling Prediction & Week 8 Preview

Texas Tech vs West Virginia College Football Spread/Handicapping

Texas Tech might be the undefeated team with the least amount of hype right now which is a bit surprising given they kind of have the inside track on the BIG 12 which last I checked that is still considered a major football conference.

The Red Raiders are the only team in the league that controls its own destiny so to speak (their second half is loaded starting with Oklahoma next week).

This is the first of back to back road games but they can’t be caught looking ahead or West Virginia will beat them like they did Oklahoma State a couple of weeks back.

Texas Tech

Texas Tech played last week with their second string quarterback but still put up 42 points in their win over Iowa State. Backup Davis Webb threw for more than 400 yards against the Cyclones showing what he might have been doing all season long if he hadn’t lost the battle with Baker Mayfield in summer camp.

It must be nice to have that kind of depth at the most important position.

In addition to those 400 yards through the air the Red Raiders also put up better than 200 on the ground and would have won more handily were it not for some turnovers as their defense gave up only 311 yards (they nearly doubled them up). It is that defense which will hold the key to the rest of their season (though probably not this week).

They are only giving up 17ppg and should be able to handle the Mountaineers this weekend. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

West Virginia

The Mountaineers are probably about where they should be given their personnel losses from last year to this. The lone exception was that victory over Oklahoma State, a win helped by a pick for a touchdown and aided by the familiarity coach Holgorsen probably still has with his former program.

Last year this team was a passing juggernaut who just couldn’t stop anybody. By comparison this is a stellar defensive team (remember by comparison) but the offense isn’t even mediocre. Bringing in transfer QB Clint Trickett has not advanced the offense at all but another transfer, RB Charles Sims from Houston has been pretty good – just lost on a pretty poor team.

Last year WVU was hammered by Tech 49-14. I think the margin will be a little closer this time but it is still going to difficult for them to really put a scare into the Red Raiders.

In fact, even though they are 3-3 at the moment I think the Mountaineers are going to find it pretty difficult to get the last three wins they need to get bowl eligible.

Spread Pick: Texas Tech -5.5
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Texas Tech 41 – West Virginia 27
