The Gophers are also off to a great start at 4-1after losing to Iowa last week and seem to be turning the corner finally under coach Jerry Kill.

If Michigan wants to stay in the hunt for the big prizes this year they absolutely have to win this one, preferably by a wide margin.

They are the more talented team but they need to show it instead of eeking out another close win like they did against Akron and Connecticut – they have not covered either of their last two.

Minnesota

The Gophers have won some games this year but looking at them objectively shows as much good scheduling as anything else. Last week was their first game in the Big Ten and they lost to Iowa in a game that they were grossly outplayed – at home no less. Against the Hawkeyes they were outgained about 3:1 while losing the turnover battle and racking up more penalties than their opponent.

It was a complete failure and this team has nowhere near the talent to win in those situations. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Last year they played Big Blue pretty tight in a loss actually gaining more first downs and possessing the ball for longer.

That is the approach they are going to have to take this weekend and hope for a little luck if they are going to get the victory – it won’t be easy.

Michigan

I think Michigan has to be the most maligned undefeated team in the nation and for good reason. After a very strong game against Notre Dame QB Devan Gardner has been awful the last couple of weeks with a 2 to 5 TD to INT ratio. Last week against UConn he didn’t even complete 50% of his passes as they fought back to victory.

The Wolverines are nowhere near the kind of team that can play sloppily and still overwhelm an opponent. It may not come back to bite them this week but if they don’t start playing better it will as their schedule gets much harder after this one beginning with a trip to Penn State.

While the offense has struggled the defense has been pretty good especially against the run where they are 6th in the nation giving up less than 80 yards per game.

If Big Blue plays clean football they can push their record to 5-0 and maybe get rid of some of their heat.
