The only thing that is going to keep FAU out of the cellar in their first season in Conference USA is a team called FIU while Rice might be the only school in the state of Texas to finish with a losing record this year (Longhorns?).

Seeing the Owls vs. the Owls on the ticker is really the most interesting thing about this game which Rice should win fairly easily.

These teams have never met before so maybe this is the beginning of a new rivalry.

Florida Atlantic

Florida Atlantic is not a very good team, but they did begin the season with 3 straight covers so in theory they are kind of playing better than people think. If you are thinking about backing them in this one you will be happy to see the Owls are away from the nest again because those three covers were all in road games like this one.

Over the course of 4 games the Owls have had trouble moving the ball and their run defense has been terrible. The lone area of the game where they have really been effective has been pass defense which stands out because they are actually giving up fewer yards through the air than on the ground.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

This is probably a stat that will even out as they face more pass heavy teams in their league as opposed to some great strength.

Rice

These Owls from Texas are supposed to be taking a step forward this season. With many of the better teams having moved from C-USA to the American Athletic Conference and replaced with weaker teams from the Sun Belt there is an opportunity there.

This is their first conference game of the year so we will see.

A factor that bodes well is that Rice is strong running the ball. Senior running back Charles Ross is averaging better than 100 yards per game and it wasn’t all against patsies as he rushed for 107 yards with 2 TDs in their opener against Texas A&M. Rice should be able to pound away at the Owls on their way to an easy victory.

They will need senior QB Taylor McHargue to start playing better though.

He hasn’t thrown a TD pass in the 2 games since they played the Aggies and in their lone win over Kansas he was not very good.

Spread Pick: Rice -13.5
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Rice 33 – Florida Atlantic 14
