The Wildcats looked like they would take a step backward with Kain Colter banged up, but they did just fine on Saturday against Syracuse, beating them by a final of 48-27.

Trevor Siemian threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns against the Orange, while Colter came in to add another through the air, and another on the ground. Colter wound up playing after suffering a concussion in the team’s opener against California.

He completed 15 of 18 passes for 116 yards, and added 87 yards on the ground. Siemian was helped out by Tony Jones, who put up a career-high 185 receiving yards, including a 47-yard touchdown strike.

Even without standout running back Venric Mark, who missed the game with a lower body injury, the team was still able to compile a 34-7 lead at halftime, racking up 387 yards by the break, and 581 yards by game’s end.

The Wildcat defense wasn’t going to be outdone by the offense. They picked off Syracuse quarterback Drew Allen four times in the win. They did however, allow him to complete 27 of 41 passes for 279 yards.

As for Western Michigan, they must have been happy to see Nicholls State on their schedule for Week 2, considering the Colonels were coming off a 66-3 loss, but that loss came against Oregon, and Western Michigan is no Oregon. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The headliner of the Bronco offense was Brian Fields, who ran for all three of the team’s touchdowns. The game was decided in the fourth quarter on the final drive for the Broncos. The team started on their own 12 yard line down by four points and needing a touchdown.

They were able to drive to the Colonels’ 24 yard line before quarterback Tyler Van Tubbergen threw a pass that was picked off at the goal line.

The Western Michigan defense was beaten up on the ground by Nicholls State. Marcus Washington and Kalen Henderson each scored on touchdown runs in the first quarter to get Nicholls State out to a 14-0 lead.

Washington would add another touchdown run later on in the game, then the team gave up two field goals late, the final two scores of the game.

Northwestern is certainly giving away a lot of points in this one, but no team has done a better job of covering the number lately than the Wildcats, who are 9-0 ATS in their last nine home games. Conversely, the Broncos are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games against Big Ten opponents.

The Wildcats are 17-4 ATS in their last 21 games overall.

The play: Northwestern -28.5
