We are treated to three college football games on Thursday night but this is definitely the worst of the three. Two Conference USA teams face off but neither has beaten an FBS team yet this season. In fact in their wins against FCS teams one team failed to cover and the other was outgained in yards – hardly inspiring.

Neither of these teams are any good but one of them is going to walk out of this battle of Louisiana with a winning record. That is the backstory of Tulane vs. Louisiana Tech.
Tulane
After a couple of games there isn’t much to like about Tulane. They beat FCS Jackson State but were actually outgained in the contest. Were it not for 4 interceptions they might have gone down like some other schools in week 1 which really wouldn’t have been a surprise.

Those 4 interceptions also would have been impressive if it meant the Green Wave were channeling the Orange Crush defense of old but it was really just a matter of bad play from their opponent. On offense they weren’t much better as they are averaging just 340 yards per game, good for 97th in America, against weak competition.
This season was going to always be a struggle but losing to South Alabama who has been in FBS for about two second makes it look like they might be in for an especially long season. I just took a look at their schedule and there might not be any more wins left. Not even at FAU.

Louisiana Tech
The situation might not be much better for Louisiana Tech this year despite the fact that they dominated the depleted WAC last season winning 9 games and putting up some wicked scoring numbers in the process.
This year they are breaking in a new coach and new starters all over the field )only 7 starters returned) so it is no surprise that they have struggled early on.
This is their first Conference USA game and I think they may find that in this league they play slightly more defense (just slightly). New head man Skip Holtz is supposed to be a good coach but after the debacle at South Florida the jury is out for me.
One obvious difference this year is his commitment to running the ball but that again could be the competition factor as they racked up all of their stats against Lamar.
This game will be a better way to get a read on both of these teams.
