The Bearkats are coming off a huge week one victory over Houston Baptist, 74-0, but it wasn’t just because of their offense. In fact, the Kats’ defense was a bigger factor in the outcome as it dominated its opponent.

Now, Sam Houston State will look to carry that momentum into College Station.

The team is probably one of the best of the FCS schools out there right now, and are poised to surprise a lot of people this year, and if the Aggies aren’t careful, they could be the first.

Nevertheless, facing Texas A&M at home does not bode well for the Bearkats, whose pass offense is not very solid, putting up just 90 yards through the air versus Houston Baptist.

The teams rushing attack however, is much better, as it rolled up over 350 yards last time out to go with its 74 unanswered points. Not too shabby.

Meanwhile, the Aggies offense racked up nearly 500 total yards while scoring 52 points against the Rice Owls last week, but not before controversial quarterback Johnny Manziel was benched during the second half by head coach Kevin Sumlin, who sat last year’s Heisman-winner after he picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Manziel already missed the first half of the game after being sidelined because of a school-proposed suspension.

Enter in back up quarterback Matt Joeckel, who led the team, completing 14-of-19 passes for 190 yards and a score — proving that the Aggies can win games without Manziel.

Wideout Mike Evans finished the contest with two touchdowns and 84 yards on six catches.

That display and depth on offense made up for a poor showing by the defense, which allowed over 500 yards to a meager Owls’ offense that also held onto the ball for 17 minutes longer than the Aggies’ offense.

Compare that to Sam Houston State’s defense, which allowed just 90 yards.

Matt’s Prediction

Oddmakers have put up a ridiculous point spread for this matchup.

Sure, the Aggies look much better on paper, but games aren’t won on stationary, they are won on the field, where strange things happen and upsets are manufactured.

But not this weekend. Sorry.
