Florida Atlantic vs East Carolina NCAA Football Spread/Handicapping

Florida Atlantic joined Conference USA this season but little is expected of them in terms of really competing, heck they were barely worth mentioning in the Sun Belt, a much easier league.

East Carolina was always rumoured to be on the move (ACC, Big East) but they are still there and are a top contender to win C-USA East. Neither of these teams was all that impressive in their opener with predictable results: FAU lost to Miami while East Carolina beat Old Dominion.

This game may be the worst Thursday nighter we get all season long but as a conference game it at least has a modicum of importance, especially for ECU which has their sights set on a conference championship in the new look Conference USA.

A loss to FAU would be a real setback.

Florida Atlantic

If there was one positive from the Owls season opening loss to Miami it is that their pass defense was pretty good. Sure they got gouged on the ground for over 300 yards by the Hurricanes but East Carolina prefers to air it out so maybe they can cover the spread again this week.

Also, the Pirates are not nearly as athletic on defense so they should be able to put up more than 250 yards of offense this week and definitely score more than 6 points. They might even score a touchdown as ECU gave up a bunch of them to soon to be C-USA member Old Dominion. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

An upset is unlikely but a closer game seems likely this week. They actually won the time of possession battle against Miami, they just didn’t do anything when they had the ball.

East Carolina

East Carolina was not among the handful of FBS teams who lost to their FCS brethren but they were not overly impressive in their opener against Old Dominion.

They were actually down into the second quarter before ultimately pulling away even though they didn’t cover in the contest. QB Shane Carden was one of the fantasy stars of the first week with 447 yards passing and 5TDS with no interceptions.

WR Justin Hardy was on the receiving end of 16 passes for almost 200 yards of that so the Owls are going to have their hands full trying to stop him.

Even if the defense isn’t sharper for ECU this week the Owls are going to be hard pressed to keep up on offense. ECU should be among national leaders in offense all year long and Florida Atlantic doesn’t look like they will be able to slow them down.

Most teams in C-USA won’t.

Spread Pick: East Carolina -20.5
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: East Carolin 42 – Florida Atlantic 10
