Before the season started it would have been almost unthinkable that a team that enjoyed so much success recently would miss a bowl game for the first time since 2004.

They should get one step closer this weekend but nothing has come easily for the Horned Frogs this year raising the question of whether the problem is talent, adjusting to the new league, injuries or all of the above. We won’t get all of our answers this season I am afraid.

TCU

The Horned Frogs were supposed to be a B12 sleeper this season (I know I liked them in that role at least). Last season was an acclimation period to a new conference and this year they were supposed to be able to use their defense to work on the winning side of things with returning QB Casey Pachall leading the way.

Suffice it to say things have not gone as planned, the defense has been average and Pachall has been fighting with his backup Trevone Boykin for playing time all season long – with neither really playing that well.

In short TCU is not the TCU we are used to which has been killing bettors as the Frogs have gone 2-7 ATS.

This definitely is a lost season at this point but if you think that coach Gary Patterson still has a handle on this team than you have to believe you will get a good effort, even on the road, on Saturday.

That is the way I am leaning.

Iowa State

The Cyclones are hardly a great program but things are not usually this bad. Right now they are sitting on just 1 win for the year and it doesn’t look like there is much more than another one on their schedule. If that winds up being the case it will be their worst season since 1994 when they were winless which led to the hiring of coach Dan McCarney, who is one of their best coaches ever so maybe there is a silver lining.

Last year the Cyclones beat the Frogs and it was all because they forced an immature Boykin into multiple mistakes. If they can do that again they have a chance though this team is not as good as last year’s which went bowling.

This team is very bad on both sides of the ball and lacks leadership too.

The Cyclones have been known to surprise but I don’t think they have an upset like this in them this season.
