The reality is that they might have lucked out because facing FSU in the first week might be a lot easier than later in the season given the number of new players in key spots. Both of these teams have lots of questions and the answers are coming on Monday.

Florida State
If Florida State is going to continue their recent ascent it means that big things are coming from freshman quarterback Jameis Winston.
After more than a year on campus, and a slew of positive reports, it is finally time to to see what all the hype has been about. Winston is a run pass threat with a rare big arm in the model of Robert Griffin, and he has some playmakers to work with on the outisde at FSU.
Even though they have a freshman at the controls this could be a year that the offense leads a little but for the Seminoles as few players return from their very nasty defense of last season.
The coaching staff seems unconcerned with the personnel changeover as the replacements include several former 5 star recruits and guys who played a lot last season when this team had the best defense in the conference. The defense should be very good and Pitt is not great on offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is also going to have a new quarterback at the helm but Tom Savage has infinitely more experience, having started his career by starting as a freshman at Rutgers, transferring to Arizona (where he didn’t play) and then transferring again to start at Pitt.
He has certainly seen a lot over his career but hasn’t seen much game action of late so you wonder if he might be a little like a deer in the headlight when things get started, especially given the buildup for this game. The Panthers have a solid WR in Devin Street but the other weapons have a lot to prove and running the ball might be tough wihtout a true feature back .
That is why the defense is going to have to play well to keep this one within a reasonable working margin. The defense will be the strength of this team and maybe they can confuse Winston enough to get some short fields the offense can take advantage of.
Without that I am not sure they can line up with a team with the talent of the Seminoles.
