Heisman Forecast: Week 10

CAM NEWTON, Auburn

Newton displayed a more polished passing performance last week against Ole Miss, going 18-for-24 with 209 yarda and two TDs through the air. Running the football, the junior “only” gathered 45 yards and a major, but that only underlines how ridiculously effective Newton’s scrambling has been this season.

However, one can’t help feeling that a whole lot is riding on Auburn’s season-ending trip to hated rival Alabama.

LaMICHAEL JAMES, Oregon

Oregon’s feature back firmly established himself as runner-up in the Heisman scramble after going off versus USC last week for 239 yards and three scores. James toted the ball 36 times and has definitely proved that he can be the bell-cow or the home-run threat for the unbeaten Ducks. It’d be awful hard to leapfrog Newton until he stumbles, but James’s prospects are growing brighter by the nanosecond in Eugene. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

KELLEN MOOREBoise State

The lefty from the little-known WAC conference has been remarkably steady this season, but compared to the top two in the race, Moore hasn’t really done enough wowing things to knock voters’ socks off. Part of this is because Boise is always playing with such a massive lead. Still, Moore’s statistics last week (298 yards, two TDs and one INT) typify how he just hasn’t put up the gargantuan single-game efforts of Newton and James.

ANDREW LUCK, Stanford

The creeping notion that the 2010 Heisman Trophy is a three-horse race was made more dramatic by Luck’s cock-up this past week. Throwing for 192 yards and both a TD and a pick is a half-decent custodial effort in a 41-0 win over Washington, but it does not a Heisman winner make. It’s true, Stanford only has one loss, but how much of that is Luck and how much of that is luck?

Other Mentionable

ROBERT GRIFFIN, Baylor

Following Baylor’s victory over perennial power Texas last week, the balance of college football supremacy in the Lone Star State is getting all messed up. Baylor’s unprecedented success this season can be almost wholly attributed to sophomore Griffin, who is using superb athleticism with an unbelievable aerial season to turn some heads in Waco.
