Heisman Forecast: Week 9

CAM NEWTON Auburn

The remarkable performances just keep piling up for the Tigers’ leading man. The 21-year old Georgia native and former Florida Gator is taking the country by storm with his scrambling, as evidenced by his uncanny 217 yards and two scores against LSU. With last week’s otherworldly rushing performance, Newton set the SEC’s all-time rushing record for a quarterback, with 1,077 yards and 14 TDs. That’s a crazy season for a RB – and, oh yeah… there’s three weeks left in the season. As the topper, Auburn is still unbeaten.

LaMICHAEL JAMES, Oregon

With Oregon’s systematic dismantling of every opponent this season, RB James has leapfrogged Boise pivot Kellen Moore is many people’s eyes as No. 2 on the Heisman Trophy watch list. James is too fast for anyone to get a hand on and he’s amassed 971 yards and 11 TDs, with a 7.2 yards per-clip. Oregon has also had its bye week, otherwise James would be well over a thousand yards. Newton’s campaign has been ridiculous, but if James and the Ducks keep smashing opponents the way they have, the little dynamo will be hard to ignore.

KELLEN MOORE, Boise State

The eye-bulging statistics may not be there for Moore, but the consistency certainly is. The veteran QB is piloting an unbeaten Smurf Turf squad and he’s been sitting often in the second half because the Broncos have been winning so convincingly. Let’s be honest, too: 1,865 yards, 18 majors to two INTs and a 70% completion rate isn’t half-bad, either. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

ANDREW LUCK, Stanford

Luck’s live fastball reminds older fans of another Stanford alum with a legendary arm (John Elway) and his pedigree indicates that an Elway-esque future in the NFL isn’t entirely out of the question. Stanford is enjoying a one-loss season in an uber-competitive Pac-10 conference and it’s largely due to the junior from Houston. Luck is on pace for 3,000 yards passing, 30+ passing scores and single-digit INTs. Stanford’s not unbeaten, which could be crucial, but still not too shabby.

Other Mentionables

JUSTIN BLACKMON, Oklahoma State Blackmon’s remote chances almost surely took a hit with his recent DUI arrest.
DENARD ROBINSON, Michigan ‘Shoelace’ is almost surely the fastest QB in the country, but all the other requisites aren’t there.
KIRK COUSINS, Michigan State Cousins is getting a little buzz because the surprising Spartans are unbeaten.
