Heisman Forecast: Week 8

CAM NEWTON Auburn

With losses dropping Heisman studs off the map in the blink of an eye (Re: Terrelle Pryor, Denard Robinson, Alabama players), the gifted Tigers pivot is surging to the front of the race. Although fellow stud QB, Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett, went down with an injury in last week’s match-up, Newton put his best foot forward with 140 yards passing, 188 yards rushing and four total TDs.

The lanky Florida transfer ranks second in the nation in QB rating (180.5), fourth in the nation in rushing (860 yards) and tied for fourth with 12 scores. Oh, and Auburn is still unbeaten in the SEC.

KELLEN MOORE, Boise State

Moore’s Broncos team is one who hasn’t faltered and consequently, kept Moore in the thick of the Heisman race. But let’s not forget he’s doing most of the work himself. The lefty is the only pivot with a better QB rating than Newton (an amazing 190.3), generated from a super-steady 1,567 yards passing and 16 TDs. There are players with more inflated numbers, but Moore is completing 70% of his passes and is carrying Boise into BCS talk.

LaMICHAEL JAMES, Oregon

The Pac-10’s Ducks are another unbeaten team, and they largely have their speedster RB to thank. James has racked up 848 yards and nine TDs on only 114 carries. He’s ripped off a 76-yard major thus far and he’s a threat to take it the distance every time he’s holding the football. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Oregon’s attack relies on speed and if it didn’t have James to stretch the field, the Eugene faithful certainly wouldn’t be as thrilled with the season to this point.

ANDREW LUCK, Stanford

This junior pivot – a brilliant prototype for the NFL – has stats eerily similar to Kellen Moore’s (1,538 passing yards, 16 TDs) except Luck is piloting a one-loss Stanford team instead of Moore’s unbeaten WAC outfit.

Other Mentionables

LANDRY JONES, Oklahoma This guy can throw a football and hey, he’s the quarterback of an unbeaten team with prestige from a major conference. That always draws water with voters.

DENARD ROBINSON, Michigan “Shoelace” has rushing stats that are silly, but the grumbles have grown quieter after two losses.

JUSTIN BLACKMON, Oklahoma State The sophomore wideout is having a great season (57 grabs for 955 and 12 TDs) but don’t hold your breath.
