In 2007 the Panthers came to Morgantown as 21- point underdogs and walked off with an epic 13-9 upset flushing West Virginia’s national title hopes down the toilet. West Virginia had won four of the previous five meetings between the two teams and in its previous three wins had scored 45, 45 and 52 points. Pitt has won the last two and holds a 61-37-3 advantage in the series.

Pittsburgh has won six straight games and gave up 19 points in the fourth quarter, but managed to hold on for a 27-22 victory over Notre Dame in Week 11. Dion Lewis ran for 152 yards with a touchdown to lead the way. Tight end Dorin Dickerson was named one of eight semifinalists for the Mackey Award, presented to the nation’s top tight end. Dickerson has 43 catches for 496 yards and 10 touchdowns. Freshman running back Dion Lewis ranks sixth in the nation in rushing yardage and has seven 100-yard rushing. Quarterback Bill Stull is the glue to this potent offense and is ranked fourth in passing efficiency in the nation. The Panthers, whose only loss came after blowing a 31-17 lead at N.C. State, must beat both West Virginia on the road and No. 5 Cincinnati at home to win the Big East Conference and land a BCS bid.

The Mountaineers will look to spoil that bid on Friday. West Virginia is coming off a 24-21 loss to Cincinnati Bearcats in Week 11. Quarterback Jarrett Brown ran for just 34 yards while throwing for 177 yards with a touchdown in the loss. While the defense has improved during the year the offense has completely folded. The Mountaineers have not scored 30 points in a game in five games, averaging just 22. The offensive line has been the root of many of the WVU problems. Running back Noel Devine has gone three games without reaching 100 yards rushing, and the passing game has been non-existent. The holes have not been opening and pass protection has looked more like the escort service.

One reply on “Pitt Panthers vs W. Virginia Mountaineers Preview | Pick”

West Virginia would love nothing more than to upset Pitt’s shot at a Big East title and BCS bid with memories of 2007 still fresh in their minds. This is the kind of series where anything can happen so I like the Mountaineers chances in this one.
