Pittsburgh Panthers vs. No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Preview

Notre Dame is 8-0 and they are coming off an impressive away win over Oklahoma last week and they host a Pitt (4-4) team that has won 2 straight games. Pitt is 1-1 facing ranked teams this season and their offense looked solid in their last win scoring 47 points. However, will they be able to generate any offense facing a Fighting Irish defense that ranks 2nd in the nation? NCAAF lines have Notre Dame as a big 16.5-home favorite with a total of 45.5.

In their last games Pitt beat Temple 47-17 and Notre Dame beat Oklahoma 30-13.

On the season Pitt is 4-3-1 ATS with an Over/Under record of 3-3 and Notre Dame is 5-3 ATS with an Over/Under record of 1-7.

The Fighting Irish are the only team in the nation that has 4 wins over ranked teams and 2 of those wins were against top 10 teams on the road.

Pitt racked up 528 yards in the win over Temple with QB Tino Sunseri passing for 321 yards with 3 TD and RB Ray Graham rushed for 109 yards with 2 TD and he also caught a TD pass. Pitt WR Devin Street had 140 receiving yards last week and WR Mike Shanahan is averaging 17 yards per catch. Both of these receivers are at least 6’4″.

The Pitt offense will be facing a Notre Dame defense that ranks 26th in the nation defending the pass and 9th defending the run.

QB Everett Golson, who after sitting out the previous game passed for 177 yards and rushed for 64 in the win over Oklahoma, leads the Irish offense. He has not been picked off in his last 3 games and will be facing a good Pitt pass defense that ranks 29th in the nation. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The key for Pitt on defense has to be against the run trying to contain the Notre Dame RB duo of Theo Riddick (525 yards 4 TD) and Cierre Wood (467 yards 3 TD). Pitt ranks 42nd in the nation in run defense and they gave up nearly 130 rushing yards in the win over Temple.

In some betting trends for this non-conference match up Pitt is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games, 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games, and they have an Under record of 6-0 in their last 6 road games.

Notre Dame is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, and they have an Under record of 19-7 in their last 26 home games.

Jason’s Pick: The underdog is 6-0-1 ATS in the last 7 games between these 2 teams and I think that trend will continue. Notre Dame will win, but Pitt will play well on both sides of the ball and keep it pretty close and cover the big spread.
