Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Pitt Panthers

Coach: Dave Wannstedt
2009 Record: 10-3

Pitt Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

For the first time in a long while, Pittsburgh has better odds to win the BCS title than cross-state neighbor Penn State. Wannstedt has assembled a truly strong team in Steel Town; a team that would have had at least 11 wins in 2009, were it not for a 45-44 heartbreaker at home vs. Cincinnati.

Tailback Dion Lewis surprised everyone except himself as a freshman last season. Safety Dom DeCicco is a highlight-inducer and DE Greg Romeus is a pass-rushing stud.

There are several teams clawing for conference supremacy, but none of them may be as balanced as the Panthers.

Team Strengths:

Lewis is money in the bank. Pitt has a fantastic RB pedigree with Tony Dorsett and LeSean McCoy among the alums, but Lewis only eclipsed McCoy’s Big East frosh record for yards, racking up an eye-popping 1,799 to go along with 17 TDs. Massive junior WR (6”5, 225 lbs) Jon Baldwin is also in the conference’s elite. Veteran left tackle Jason Pinkston is as strong as they come.

And we haven’t even mentioned the defense yet. Romeus, DeCicco and Sam ’backer Max Gruder (’09s leading tackler) lead the way in that department.

Team Weaknesses:

In 2009, senior QB Bill Stull did a very solid – if somewhat caretaker-ish – job under center. This season Pitt breaks in a new quarterback in sophomore Tino Sunseri. Junior Pat Bostick was hyped coming out of high school, but he’s largely been a bust.

Sunseri has a big arm, but Stull put up a clean 21-8 ratio last season, and Sunseri will doubtlessly make more mistakes in his first year as a starter.

2010-2011 Pitt Football Prediction: 11-2

The Panthers have some venomous rivals in the Big East in Cincinnati, West Virginia and South Florida, yet they are probably the most well-rounded team in the conference, especially if Sunseri can perform adequately. With Lewis behind him, the QB need not be a world-beater. Pitt travels to South Bend in 2010 and three of the last four games are on the road against Connecticut, South Florida and Cincy.

The Big East crown could quite possibly be decided in the balance of those weeks.
